Nope. Shouldn't have to be the school's job to teach morals. Should be the parents' job. Too bad many parents don't bother! Kids should come to school already knowing that they should be kind to all people. If that was the case, maybe I could get through the math book in one year, for the first time ever. Yeah; right. Sorry I sound so bitter, but as a teacher, I am tired of society making it the school's job to parent children! Where do we draw the line?

OK I'm out too...just had to vent!

If there is time to teach them that gay people are immoral, isn't there time to read to them?

Great Point!  Demographics have a lot to do with this.

These programs are in full-force in most public schools and are taught (as sex ed is) by folks specificially trained to deliver the material

Another great point!   Unfortunately, these children usually come from homes where the adults are not kind.and ultimately, the kids are on the losing end of learning.

All in all, this thread was very interesting and the back and forth was pretty tame.  Too bad the debate forum is gone.

Its been very enlightening reading through this thread.

I am younger than a lot of the women on here but I actually have had programs about these subjects several time in school. D.A.R.E., G.R.E.A.T., and others are usually taught by an outside source--someone who is in fact certified. Just my personal experience in the school system recently ;)

I do believe they are glorifying what to me is an unnatural living arrangement.  I have no problem with homosexuality being taught in health class as a part of curriculum when my child is a pre teen or a teenager but I do have a problem with someone filling my 5 year olds head with stuff I find inappropriate for his/her age.  I wouldn't even discuss this "type of family" with my child until they were definitely old enough to grasp what it all meant.

I'm wondering how you would handle the following situation:

What if your child was friend's with another child through school, or soccer, or a Gymboree-type place and you had only met the mother.  Then one day you find out that the child, who both you and your child like, is from a home with two mommies.  You've met the one mother and you like her as well.  Would you stop your child from hanging out with that child?  What if the mother called you and was asking for a playdate or a birthday party?  Would you tell her no b/c you don't approve of her spouse?

It's definitely a possibility that it's going to happen one day.  I work in a public school and one of our teachers is gay and is pregnant and everyone knows about the situation and it's accepted.  It's heading in that direction.

I agree with that.  However, what this appears to be is more of a tolerance and acceptance issue, not a moral one.  The fact is there are different types of families.

How about the child who if from these families?  Does anyone care that those children feel accepted and welcomed and not condenmed and isolated?

If parents care so deeply about their children's education, why aren't they teaching them how to read?  I know I learned to read before I was in school.  I mean, this seems to be about parents that care about their kids and their kids' education.  If there is time to teach them that gay people are immoral, isn't there time to read to them?
So all of us opposed to teaching about homosexuals and their way of life don't read to their kids?  That one is new.  That isn't generalizing at all!  To even assume that is ....well WOW!  I do care about my childrens education...and I read to my kids all the time thank you!  I also teach them what is moral and what is not.  I teach them about what is acceptable behavior and what is not.  I do it all.  That is what good parents do!  Yes there are some bad parents out there that don't.  I don't deny that.  But to assume that the parents who are against this type of learning are neglecting their children by not reading to them is so far off the mark.  And I know you are out so you don't have to bother answering.....I'm just sayin'....

Public schools were initially founded in America with the purpose of creating good citizens, not drones who can do math and science.
And some of the most brilliant people of the world (Lets say the Chinese for instance) are hard core into their studies.  Ahead of us academically in all areas...and I'm sure they are worried about teaching all about homosexuality.  It is number 1 on their list I bet.  I figure we are a HUGE joke to them now...more than ever!

Ok..I was going to be done with this thread but I don't want you thinking I'm ignoring you I will answer...

No I wouldn't stop my child from hanging out with their friend.  As I said I am NOT a gay basher here.  I don't believe in certain lifestyles.  My kids will know I don't approve of how they live, but they are to repect that mother and still be nice to their friend.  I will teach them that there are other types of families out there but we personally don't advocate that type of living arrangement nor do we think it's ok.  And again, I want to be the one who teaches them about it.  Not the public school system.   They can still have playdates and go to birthday parties just like always.  I don't approve of a lot of things that my kids friends parents take part in (for instance we know a few of the parents have been known to be swingers) but I still let the kids play with their friends.

I am redirecting the conversation to include the Americans only because this issue takes place in American schools.  Thank you!

I personally do not think that's appropriate. You completely redirect a conversation because of your location is kind of silly. Everyone around the world is going to have an opinion and to cut them out because on page 10 you decide it should only include Americans doesn't seem right.

pfff seriously?Happy ROFL Thats your response?
No, my response is I have continously reported your posts as inappropriate for the discussion and yet you still continue to come here?  Why?  I am not talking about Canada right now...I am talking about schools in America.  I honestly would LOVE to have opinions of my out of the country friends but you do NOT know how to play nice.  If you would leave, I would change it back...K??

And I also don't think it's appropriate for you to push someone out of a thread.

Wow...

I am definitely not loving where this is going.

You may think so but others have been able to voice their opinion without name calling.  This particular person cannot do that so I feel like the conversation would go better if I limit it to those who will be affected by this.  I never reported Lissa as inappropriate because she wasn't!  I don't agree with her, but I do take what she says into consideration.  I do NOT go for people who name call and it is against IG rules....
