My Fabulous Four

I toyed with the idea of getting one in my last pregnancy, but thought "No, this is our last and that is just silly!"  So I had the same thoughts this time around as well(obviously I was wrong and #3 was NOT our last one!).  Even thought about renting one, but decided not to.  Well the other night I was able to use a doppler and I loved it!  And since I wrote down the model and everything, I went on e-bay last night and ordered one!  It was so nice to hear the heartbeat--plus the one that I ordered has cables and things to where I can place it on my computer after recording it and send it to others--and since my family is over 3 hours away from me, this will be a great way for me to involve them also!

So, who else has a doppler and what have you thought of it?  I ordered the Sonotrax, 3Mhz in orange--it has the digital read and three different functions that allow you to record the heartbeat, averages the heartbeat and other functions--when I "tested" this one the other night, I was really impressed with it--and the price was pretty great too!  The probe is smaller then the ones that they use in the OBs office, but it picked things up for me just fine--that is when the little one was not trying to get away from me pushing down on it with a probe!  But the person that let me borrow it had just bought it and did not have a clue on how to work the functions, like averaging and locking in the number with the baby's heartbeat and such!  Just such a reassuring sound and a small price to pay for piece of mind--plus my DDs loved hearing the heartbeat as well!!!!

This is one I looked at...what do you think of it?  I'd like to not spend over $100., but don't want it to be a "cheapy"...so might go up on my price, if that's the case..  I saw a post about this...I can't rent, dh would be like nooooo.  If I just buy one, he can't stop me. lol

I'd love some ideas if anyone has any...

claire2b--That is the one that I ordered!!!!  I tried it out the other night and it worked great!  I ordered from the place in Cedar Lake IN though(I am antsy and it is closer to me!) I only paid a few bucks more, but like I said I am closer to IN then UT!

Mrs. Harb--I too got a cheapie with DD#2 that was at Wal-Mart--I could NEVER get a heartbeat on it!  Not even when I was about to deliver!

I was also looking at ordering more gel, but then I read on a rental site that some women just use mineral oil, vitamin E oil or just plain ol body lotion and that works for them!  So I will just have to see!

I rented a Doppler w/my first pregnancy. I was traveling internationally and it definitely gave me some piece of mind when I was far from home. I only kept it for a month or two though.

I wouldn't get one again because I'm not convinced that routine monitoring via Doppler is safe/comfortable for the baby. There really hasn't been a lot of research done on using a tool like this on a daily basis. Just because something is safe for intermittent use, doesn't mean it's good for every day, kwim? Just too many unknowns for me.

I came to this conclusion today, after shopping and reading different sites.  I also noticed some sites rented them only at your doctors request or medical reasons while being under a doctor's care.  I googled it and while I never got the "bad for baby" vibe... I decided against getting one.

Not just safety concerns for daily use (I would have used it more then once a day prolly)...other reasons too..  :(  I got all excited too! lol

I am just a bit on edge this time--after the early losses when ttc DD#3, and the new practice that I am going to, plus the bleeding that I have had with clots, AND I do not have a doctor appt until the 16th of Feb when I will be 15 weeks along(that will be the 1st time I will hear the heartbeat, the last was at 9w4d on u/s)...I just need that reassurance.  I am not planning on using it every day, maybe once or twice a week.

I agree that every day use is a little touchy, but right now, my needing piece of mind with just stopping progesterone(always makes me nervous), and the wait to hear the heartbeat at the doctors, is outweighing the NOT using a doppler.  I am telling my doctor that I have one, and again, I will only be using mine 1-2times a week until my next appt--then it may only come out every once in awhile!

I got the cheap angel sound doppler for my 4th child, and use it till my 5th child. Although it cant pick heartbeat as early as those pocket fetal doppler, but it sure does reassure me that my baby are doing fine (it can detect only from week 16 if I m not wrong). Now, with my 6th child, like you, I need more assurance, since I was on progestorone earlier on. I got it, was able to hear the baby heartbeat as early as 9 weeks + (altho u need to spend a while to search for it). I told my RE about it, and she says its fine. I only use it less than 5 mins per time, but not daily. Hope it helps!

I agree... if I was in your shoes, I would have it and use it!  I'm not against them....still considering it.  I mean I keep thinking of all the scary moments for just a normal healthy pregnancy...like if movement stops on a Sat or Sunday night...instead of rushing to hospital..if you had that on hand.. you could get releif in an instant.

I read another mom... wannab (I think) that had the heart rate slow in the doc's office....how scary her nights sleep waiting to see the specialist was.  Anther good reason it might be good to have one.

Gus...

I loved mine. It doesn't hook up to the computer or anything, we just taped it with a little handhelp recorder- but it was awesome. I heard the heartbeat at just under 10 weeks (and just about every day after that) and it was certainly a sanity saver.  KY jelly works GREAT when you run out of the dopplar gel.

This post just reminded me to get mine listed  on eBay. I keep spacing it off. Lol.
