There was a lady on here eightin08 who had adopted from Guatamala and she was wanting to again, and was waiting until they reopened. She was diagnosed with lymphoma earlier this year, so she has not been posting as much, but maybe she will see your post and respond. We considered waiting for Guatamala, but after just having a falied adoption through Vietnam, we decided the uncertainty of it all was just too much. Good luck!

Yup!! I adopted a baby girl from Guatemala in 07. It was the best thing I ever did in my life :) She is all things JOY. I had 6 bio kids (b,g,b,b,b,b) and all of them wanted a sister! God sent us the perfect girl. I absolutely adore Guatemala, I had a wodnerful time there and was able to visit my baby every month till it was time to pick her up for good at 7 months. INcredible experience.
I was dx with Lymphoma in June and am halfway through my treatments. My agency said I could adopt again when I am done and have a "cured" letter, that should happen by November :)
They are thinking Guatemala will reopen in early 09. Here's to hoping!!
Here is a picture of my 2 girls. They adore each other!

DH and I were looking seriously into Guatemala because of it's proximity to us compared to other countries (we're in Texas), the young age at which the children come home, most of the children are in foster homes as compared to orphanges, and as an added bonus, DH and I both speak Spanish :)

Well for me there are many reasons. Mainly what it comes down to is what you have a heart for. When we decided to adopt there was no question to where we would go. My hubby and I want a little dark hair brown eyed girl! When i see those little children from Guatemala my heart melts and actually when i see any spanish children my heart melts. My family lives on faith and we truly feel this is God's plan for us.
Besides our faith, Guatemala has or had a great program. The children were in foster care before the new law but now they will be placed in orphanages. The travel is short & sweet. Most referrals are young babies. Generally they are in good health. Once you have a referral you can visit your baby. The best part of all the babies are beautiful!!!

Yup, Alice is right. My DD is light skinned (although she tans unbelievable!!!) and not Mayan looking. She is half Spanish and half Mexican.
However, the kids are gourgeous. The dark brown skin, shiny hair and unreal brown eyes....I am attracted to those the most! We were open to race, but Hispanic children are what we would choose (so we did :) )
Putting physical appearance aside...with the old laws (who knows what will happen now..) the country is easy and cheap to get to, they allow you to visit as much as you want and even foster if you want to, the kids are in foster homes, much better care than orphanages and the process is relatively short, so the kids come home as babies (average 6-8 months). Plus spanish is easy to learn and the country is beautiful (to sightsee)!
This will change, but no one knows what it will be next.
Here is another picture of Abby and I taken a few days ago. I just adore this child and I LOVE having girls!!!!
