Is PGD Family Balancing legal in Cyprus?

I've contacted a clinic in Zygi on the south coast of Cyprus, which very clearly said that PGD for family balancing is NOT legal in any of Cyprus.  In addition I have contacted a clinic in the north of Cyprus which has said that family balancing IS legal.   However, if the north being Turkish, follows Turkey's laws which do not allow PGD for this end why do Turkish clinics send patients to Cyprus?

I would really appreciate a definitive answer as to whether PGD for family balancing reasons is legal in Cyrpus.  Does the fact that Cyprus is split into north and south, the south being greek and the north being turkish affect the legality of PGD?

So can anybody clarify the legality of PGD family balancing in Cyprus and in addition point me to the source of law?

That is a very interesting question...I have contacted a greek clinic which says it is illegal in Grece. A lady here has been in turkey for medical reason and the doctors says it is illegal in tukey just for gender selection.

I know from a woman who has been in J..... in turkey : they make you sign up a paper to say that you go to cyprus for PGD. But why if it is illegal?!?!

    Really confusing!!!

Re: Is PGD Family Balancing legal in Cyprus?

PGD is legal in Cyprus - the non EU half -the northern half.  Famagusta I believe, is the place where one hospital is used for Gender Selection.  This is whether you go Cyprus direct or to Jinemed in Turkey - it's just across the border from Turkey.  If you look at Jinemed's website, it says for legal reasons to help others for things such as GS, they have another clinic they are linked with and this is the one in the Turkish/Cypriot part.  I believe that they will do it all in Turkey if you want - but that's a decision for you.  If you go to Turkey and then to Cyprus, they will sort out flights for you (I think it was about £200 for that).

Rainsbury Clinic in London uses Cyprus too.  I think it's about the only place close enough to the UK where it is legal.

Ah that's helpful. I really hope I can afford it by next summer, & manage to persuade DH / trade him in for someone more supportive! I know the Rainsbury man uses a Cyprus clinic but I don't like how he charges so much to be the middle-man, tho' it is useful to have someone helping you with things I guess, if you can afford them.

Re: Is PGD Family Balancing legal in Cyprus?

Forgot to say that neither Turkey or North Cyprus is in the EU - most EU countries have European law banning GS.  Turkey has its own legal restrictions under its own Government.  North Cyprus has its own Government too.  One bans GS; the other doesn't.

Re: Is PGD Family Balancing legal in Cyprus?

Thanks for all the replies.  Having our little girl, is something that my husband and I both jointly want in order to complete our family.  As with everyone here we have vested alot of our hope in PGD so that we can complete our family.

So I'm now clear that PGD for Family Balancing is legal in North Cyprus, but what about in Turkey?  If its available in the Turkish part of Cyprus why not Turkey itself - I'm so confused and want to be really clear before we make any more contact with organisations.

I am just quoting what Markyjo wrote in a previous post......'being in Istanbul, they avoid a problem.   How?  The Republic of Turkey straddles Asia and Europe - Istanbul lies on both continents and where the hospital is positioned, it is over the Turkish border'

I know of another girl on here who used Jinemed and said it was very professional and had no problems.  That is good enough for me..so I will be going there next year!

Re: Is PGD Family Balancing legal in Cyprus?

So I take it that Jinemed in the Asian part of Turkey - which would explain the ability to do PGD.  But is north Cyprus part of the EU or not?   Further is Jinemed the only clinic in the 'correct' geographical location or are there others in Asian Istanbul or other parts of Turkey?

    Many thanks,

     DSP

There are other Turkey Clinics but I don't personally know the names, only the Jinemed.

I don't know that 1; The Rainsbury in UK use it but they charge loads extra to be a 'middle-man' Have you checked out the Jinemed web-site? It's usually on the Ads banner at the top of this forum? So wish I had more cash; their 3 week hotel-with-pool package sounds perfect!

Jinemed is not in the Asian part of Turkey.  As per my previous posts in this thread, Jinemed use an associated clinic across the border from them - this is what they say on their website.  Having had a consultation with one of the doctor's, they tell me that "across the border" is Cyprus (the Turkish part of Cyprus - northern Cyprus) and if you look at an atlas, you will see it's not very far and they charge about £200 on top of your package to get you there. (Also mentioned in the post - northern Cyprus is not part of the EU - neither is Turkey but it makes no difference as I said Turkey has its own legal restrictions banning GS and northern Cyprus does not ban it.)

To obtain your treatment legally, you go to Turkey (or be monitored in the Portland clinic in London and then go to Turkey), then then send you to Cyprus for a few days, then back to Turkey to be checked and then back to the UK.  I asked if you can go to Turkey, Cyprus and direct back to UK and they said if everything is OK, that's fine.  I'm not sure which would be cheaper - I suspect the latter option.  But as I also mentioned in previous posts, Jinemed will still do the PGD in Jinemed but it's illegal.  You have to sign a form but I think this is to say about checking for abnormalities for the PGD.  In checking chromosomal abnormalities, they come across the gender.  You then choose which you want.  This is sailing close to the wind for my liking but it's down to you as an individual what you want to do.  The patient representatives will tell you it can be all done in Turkey; the doctor will tell you that you have to go to Cyprus for part of the treatment.  I was up front with the doctor, explaining that I am a lawyer and this is what he told me.  It made what they said on their website more clear and makes perfect sense to me now, given northern Cyprus has no legal restrictions for GS.

Cost wise, Turkey is the cheapest if all done in Turkey; Turkey then via Cyprus is next but only increased by a few hundred pounds; Cyprus direct is next and the most expensive is Rainsbury who uses Cyprus.

Re: Is PGD Family Balancing legal in Cyprus?

Thanks Markyjo for making sense of the PGD family balancing minefield.  So essentially there is a choice between legal (North Cyprus for embryo transfer) and non legal route (having the embryo transfer in Turkey).- the legal route involving more expense and also alot more faff if treatment is started in Turkey ( I have two lovely boys).  Decisions ..........

However if you decide to use a clinic in Istanbul for all of your treatment how do you know that they will fulfill their promise and carry out PGD  for FB, as strictly they would not be able to promise anything that is illegal?  Have people from this board been there and had no problem achieving PGD for FB (even if indirectly checking for chromosonal abnormalities) in Turkey without having to go to Cyprus.  My only worry is booking the treatment and then being told once there that 'I'm sorry Mrs ........ but we can't do PGD for FB because this isn't the policy at our clinic'.  That would make my heart sink.

     Thanks,

    DSP

     P.S. This board is great!
