Hi I just wanted to say that I saw your post by chance I am really sorry for your news.  I know exactly how worried you must be, my baby has just been diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (one of the worst types of congenital heart defects) so we are devestated.  I am really sorry for the loss of your first baby. We have been through an amnio after a high risk AFP which came back normal, but its just one thing after another isn't it!!! As impossible as it is try to remain positive it is still only a probability and hopefully this will become a distant memory.  I just wanted to say that my thoughts are with you and really hope that everything turns out ok.

With my first ds, we had a scare.  His numbers were a little different, 1:200 (I'm not sure exactly, but something very close to that), so we went on to have an amnio which came back negative for downs.  I also know of a mum at my DS#2's pre-school and her numbers were even worse, something like 1:50.  She had a second NF scan done at a different place and the results were totally  different.  Her daughter is now 5 and perfectly "normal".  I hope this helps and I hope you get different results next time.

Sorry to hear you are going through this. 

I just wanted to say that my BFF was told with her first baby, that the baby would have downs based on the nucal scan.  Well, the baby didn't have it and this is why I don't like this test.  I think there is too much room for error and I am praying this will be the case for you too.  My friend opted not to have the amino but had to carry all the feelings and wondering the whole rest of the pregnancy and you are right....this does suck.  I just wanted to let you know that this test can be wrong.

Sorry you are going through this again. My thoughts are with you diring this time. I would just like to say i had 2 GFwho had a high nuchal fold and had an amnio and both babies were noraml. So keep the faith and i hope that all works out healthy and happy for you and your family.

I am so sorry that you were given this news.  Did they do the first trimester screen that combines the NT fold measurments with your bloodwork (finger prick)?  If the finger prick wasn't done as well I think that the results have a much higher false positive rate.  My BFF always had babies with large measurements, but none of her four babies had downs.

I'm sure that you are very worried.  I hope that you get better news from any additional testing that you have done.  Praying for you and baby!

 I'm sorry you got bad news today. We had a scare with our second son's ultrasound. He had three separate indicators that increased the risk for Down Syndrome. He is fine.

1:99 is a higher risk than you would have otherwise, but it's still a very slim chance. And the 1:989 is miniscule. I don't think you said how old you are, but just for some perspective, a 41-year-old mom has a 1:85 chance of Down Syndrome, but that means the vast majority still have healthy babies.

It is hard to have to struggle with news like this. Sometimes I think all that testing can do more harm than good. 

My aunt had A bad nuchal scan , bad numbers and an untrasound that was positive for a heart defect. THe doctors said the baby had trisomy 18. The did not do the amnio and waited until the birth to find out he was a perfectly normal boy.

I had good numbers but a positive nuchal scan with second boy. Turns out the scan was angled and made the neck look thick. I had it redone and it was fine.
