Moms with girls or anyone with experience for that matter, please help!

I'm going to try not to piss anyone off by asking these questions but I have some seriuos questions about how to take care of a girl! Just stupid questions really but it's getting close and I am truely clueless. I have never changed a girl diaper, given one a bath, done their hair nothing. I'm really getting anxiuos I am not going to be able to do this right. Can you please give me any and all tips you didn't know about baby care that is girl related. Like, do they pee on you like boys when you change their diapers? My friend even said they can have like a "mini" period, spotting I guess, when their born so not to freak out if this happens. Is that true? Do the hair ribbons hurt their heads? Is the glue they use to attach little bows to babies skull harmful? Is there any products that should be really avoided when it comes to things like this? Gosh, I'm really starting to panic here, and I don't want to offend anyone who may think I am being ungrateful and just be happy that I am finally getting my daughter, because believe me I am over the moon about it. I just feel clueless and don't know if I am going to a good girl mom. I never had a sister around either. Everything is just so foreign to me. I wish I felt more comfortable but I guess that will come with time and experience huh?

Don't feel bad, I'm gonna have to ask similar quesitons about boy care if I'm having a boy.  I would think the nurses would teach you how to clean your DDs privates in the hospital if you ask.  Just make sure you wipe front to back and clean out all the folds and creases.  Although I've heard the white stuff is normal and protective and just wipe what you can but don't scrub it out.  But you may have to ask the nurses or doctor on that, because I've heard conflicting info on it.  But girls can pee on you, but I imagine it's nothing like what a boy can do.  And normally the pee just goes straight down onto the surface you are changing her on, although sometimes it can be pointed out a little.  You still have to make sure you do it fast and keep something there if she does start to pee.  And the same thing when you give her a bath she can pee on you before you get her diaper back on.  None of my girls had any bleeding when they were born.  I've heard of it, I guess it's kind of like milk coming out of their nipples (never had that either).  I think it usually only happens when the mom has a lot of hormones she gave to the baby.  I've never been a big fan of the single bows that get stuck on their heads.  But I know what they use to stick them on isn't harmful (I think they use KY jelly sometimes?).  IDK, but I'm sure the nurses at the hospital do, since they loved putting them on all my DDs at the hospital.  Even though they usually fall right off anyways.  I prefer the baby head band style hair bows, but make sure they aren't too tight.  Some of the ones I had left red marks which made me feel bad, although I'm sure it's the same as having something that leaves red marks on us but doesn't hurt us.  I'm sure you will do fine!  Just experiment with the hair things and practice and watch what others are doing.  And don't be afraid to ask the nurses questions about cleaning her.

Alright, you gotta take a step back and remember...you're a female yourself. You know how to keep yourself clean down there, it's the same for the baby, just be much more gentle. When you clean her dirty butt, wipe front to back to reduce the chance of infection. Open the lips carefully if she pooped and it got really messy and inside, and lightly wipe a wipe in there. I don't know about the "period" thing, Ahyla never had it. My mom says out of us four girls, neither of us did either. However, I'm not saying it's not possible. If your concerned about it, ask the doctor. As for the peeing, keep her covered! >.< Ahyla LOVED going to the bathroom when I would change her. The pee mostly just lifted up a little and then ran down her and to her back, but poop.... Doh!  Lets just say Ahyla was like a firehydrent once, and got poop on her crib and wall five feet away. Envy That wasn't fun. Baths, I can assume you'd give them the same way you would a boy, but bubble baths aren't good for girls...as they aren't good for any female, so if you give her one (way later on) just remember not to give them often. Also, don't put baby powder on her butt or privates, it's not really good either. The glue doesn't hurt them, my mom used it on us girls. She says just use a bit of water to loosen the glue when you take it off. I use the headbands on Ahyla. It does indent in their head because their head is so soft, but I'm positive it doesn't hurt her. She's never showed any sign of it hurting.

Hm, what else has happened that might be helpful with girls....Hm, I don't really know. I'm so used to girls, having 3 sisters and all, and now Ahyla. Nothing phases me. Haha.

I think I answered all your questions stated, if you have any more, spring them.

Good luck, breath. It'll  come naturally. Don't fret about it too much. Love Ya!  You'll have her soon enough, and she'll grow too fast for what you want. Sad Video tape if you can, take lots of pictures, you'll apprieciate it later. Dress her up as much as you can now, they won't let you dress  them much after about 7ish. Haha.

Rawmonster- what is wrong with putting baby powder on girls, I thought that was pretty harmless. Did Aahyla have this milk thing emily was talking about? Thats something I never heard of. I'm confused. I didn't think it was even possible for them to produce milk until later in life. Just shows you how much I don't know. I guess I'll learn quick!

This is true, it is nothing you need to be worried or upset about.  It is just the result of the mom's hormones that are still affecting the baby.  It's weird, but it's one of those things that are like the umbilical stump, gross and weird but just normal.

Baby powder is not recommended for either boys or girls, because of the dust.

Don't worry, you'll get the hang of diaper changing right away, and for all the rest, babies are babies. Hearts

Try not to worry--you are going to do a great job with your baby girl!  It is obvious that you are a great mom and that is why you are asking all these questions.  Everyone has already answered your questions and I just wanted to add that if you are concerned about the little bows then I make special baby hair bows where nothing but ribbon will touch your sweet dd's head.  Also if she is born without any hair then I can do custom headbands as well :)  If you are interested you can check out my bio and the link is there or you can pm me.

Someone already answered about the baby powder. I'm not sure exactly what it does, but an aunt of mine who is license in taking care of children and stuff has told me that it's been found that it can cause problems for them later on.

Ahyla never did have the milk thing either, no. Guess my hormones didn't effect her strongly?

I actually first heard of this on an episode of King of the Hill, but it happened to a male baby.  So since I wanted to make sure I wasn't giving you false info I tried searching online for info on it.  And this is all I found http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071015065611AAGdrPY.  I wouldn't be too concerned about it happening, if it does at all.  But I'm under the impression it's pretty rare.  Sorry to freak you out!

I felt the same way about the diaper changes.  So far they do pee with the diaper off but I call it a "Sneaky Pee" because you don't always see it happen and don't notice til you get them redressed and their clothes are all wet.  ALWAYS happens in the middle of the night but I am much better about making sure there is a diaper under them at all times through the change.

My girls didn't have any spotting but they do have a thick white discharge in the folds of their labia.  The pediatrician told me that it's normal and sort of a protective coating so not to worry about trying to wipe it all off.  I occasionally check to make sure poop hasn't gotten in there.

No experience with bows yet.  They don't have much hair and I don't want to glue anything on them.

I was the EXACT same way as you are!  I was so freaked out about caring for my little baby GIRL before she was born.  But, she acted like a baby and was pretty much genderless, apart from the obvious diaper thing that has already been addressed.

I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in freaking out!  I did too!  I think it is just because we want to do everything right for our daughters that we've wanted FOREVER!  I think we're normal!?  Happy Wink
