Since my dad was an only child and I was the only granddaughter, I received all my grandmother's jewelry when she died 20 years ago.

I reset her engagement ring and some other stones into pieces I wear a lot. But there were a couple of small gold necklaces and about 10 charms from charm bracelets that have been sitting in a box for 20 years.

Well, I just took it to our jeweler (along with some old boyfriend pieces and broken pieces) and he gave me $890!

And it was not a big pile at all. So, if you can part with your old gold, I would say go for it!

jojo~ i think ALL gold counts 10k 14k, white, rose etc!

i have thought about doing this but i always hear the CASH FOR GOLD commercials on sirius radio. i wonder what the payout from your jeweler differed from something like the C4G people?

was this just a normal jeweler... like in the mall ... that you took your stuff to?

Yes, all gold counts and 24kt is worth more than say 10kt or 14kt. I brought things like one earring (I lost the other), broken and twisted necklaces and even an old watch. He looked at everything with his lupe and kept or rejected things (his rejections were stuff that wasn't gold, I guess they can tell b/c it's stamped 14kt, 10kt, etc.)

We have been using this jeweler for the 12 years we have been married (and we've referred a lot of family and friends to use him so we trust him). He is in CT and is not a chain. However, there are other jewelers and stores (especially the ones that buy and sell coins) that will buy gold.

However, after I came home with my loot, DH asked me if I shopped around and got other prices. Surprise Well, no, I didn't and he told me that gold is going for $900/ounce and that I might have gotten ripped off.

So, I called the coin selling store that I referred to above and asked if they bought gold and how much it was an ounce. (Now mind you, I have no more gold to sell so this was just research) and she said that it's $344/ounce! So I asked her about the gold rate I saw on the internet (I just now googled "gold rate on stock exchange" and there is a link that gold is $930/ounce)

Anyway, the girl from the coin store told me that to get $900/ounce, you need 200 ounces or more and that is for pure gold. Like those gold bricks you see on tv. 14kt is not pure gold, it's only 14 kts of gold. I guess the rest is other metals.

Anyway, I do not have the courage to call my jeweler and anonymously ask how much they are buying gold for. If it's similar to $344 an ounce, then I did okay, if it's less than that, then the moral is, do your homework.

Having said that, google "selling gold" and your state to find buyers near you. There is also a company called "US Gold Buyers" but you have to mail your gold to them. I think they are legit, but I do not think I would mail gold.

Sorry this is so long, Good luck everyone!

I have used US Gold Buyers - they are totally legit and were written up to excellent reviews in the Wall Street Journal. They will let you know the payout and if you don't like the number, they return all your stuff. If/when I sell anymore though, I'd like to take it to someone local, just because I would have personal verification of what some of the pieces are (I was unsure if some things were 14k, 10k, etc.) It was definitely a good way to pocket a couple hundred bucks after our vacation this year!

I wish I had some gold to sell...today I went to the jeweler's to get a gold earring back for a set of diamond earrings in which I had lost the screw-on back to one of them.  It cost me $15 for a TINY earring back "because of the price of gold these days".  But I can't wear them without the back so I swallowed hard and bought it....Sad

Hey sailormoonmomma:  not sure how much you will get for your earrings. When I was selling my gold, I brought in a diamond wedding band (about 1 carat total weight) and asked our jeweler if I should sell it (it was DH's ex-fiancee's-to-be wedding band, they broke up before they got married so he never gave her the ring. And I didn't want it for my wedding band, so it's just lying around). And he said I wouldn't get as much for it as I would like (or as much as DH paid 18 years ago.)

So really, you can just take it to a jeweler and ask the question and if you don't like the price, say "thank you" and walk away. I think it's sweet that you want to give DD those earrings Love Ya! and if you don't like yellow gold, the jeweler can reset it in white gold or platinum, but that will cost you a lot now b/c of the price of gold (or maybe sell him the yellow gold in exchange for him resetting the earrings in white gold).

Do not send your gold to goldkit.com. I sent them a big pile of broken gold items. I even sent them a few gold rings with gemstones. Value of the gold was around $700 and all they sent me for all of it was $22!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Total scam and once you send the gold to them, you can;t change your mind.
