Investigating Legal EU options - hope this helps

I've been doing some research of my own into this after getting inspiration from some of these forums and in particular, a few knowledgeable people with their posts who replied to my private messages and to those people, I'd like to say thanks very much because it's helped me to make a decision over what treatment to have and it has also helped my GD no end.

So I hope the information below is of some help and apologies for any duplication from any other threads.  I used a false name, an old pay as you go sim card for calls just in relation to this and a different email address with Hotmail because I wanted to ask those questions about legality and "put my cards on the table" so to speak.

The information I found out is as follows:-

RAINSBURY CLINIC in London, as many have said, expensive.  I spoke to Mr Rainsbury earlier today.  You are monitored with their clinic in London and then you go to Cyprus for treatment.  One IVF/PGD cycle costs £13,000 - due to go up in January.  You may get a price fix if you ring him and say you are enquiring with a view to starting early next year, as he offered me.  It's still very expensive, as someone else has pointed in out their posts when people were asking.

CYPRUS - Mr Rainsbury was very open with me so I thought I'd check out the legalities of Cyprus.  You may know that in EU countries, gender selection is banned.  Cyprus is half EU (with it's Turkish half) and half is not in the EU - it is that half of the country you would go to for legal IVF PGD treatment based on gender selection.  I have got costs for this as follows:-

£7,806 for a cycle (was told it was about £7k over the phone but have since received an email) and this includes14 nights stay at a 4 star hotel for 2 including breakfast and dinner, IVF one cycle with PGD, tests and airport transfers (no flight).  You could try and reduce your costs by staying somewhere cheaper as an option.  If you want part monitoring in the UK, London was mentioned, this will cost "more or less £1,000" extra.  I appreciate that the total cost for this is still high when comparing to America, but the travel would be easier and cheaper.  Further, it just goes to show the mark up Rainsbury has on his clinic.

TURKEY - cheapest option of £4,700.  Email has not come through for the full break down as yet but I think it was a similar package to the Cyprus one.  I asked about the legality issues and they said they used to send people to Cyprus(!) but they don't need to anymore - being in Istanbul, they avoid a problem.  I'm editing my previous post on this because IT IS LEGAL.  How?  The Republic of Turkey straddles Asia and Europe - Istanbul lies on both continents and where the hospital is positioned, it is over the Turkish border.

For costs, see further down this thread now that I have received an email as to the detailed breakdown.

Those are your EU options as far as I can see.  Good luck to anyone considering and taking this option.  If anyone has had treatment at any of these places, I would be grateful to hear from you.  Although I know a bit about IVF, the risks involved, how it works, etc, I will be looking into that in more depth but first, I needed to check out the choices and costs and so I don't have any recommendations for any of these places.  I hope that it helps people to consider whether it is an option to them, given the costs and travelling, so they can save up whilst looking into what it all entails.

I know i would love to go to america but there is no way my young family would put up with travelling all that way it would be so expensive and hard work. I am hoping to stay in turkey (april 2009) for all the treatment. do u know how long that would be would it be for 21 days? I have found a local clinic to monitor me beforehand they said they'll do scans etc. sorry i am not really clued up in what happens when going thru ivf?

    thank you Emmax

EMMA - not really sure on times but 21 days has been mentioned before for the whole of the treatment.  However, if you went with the Turkish option and went to London for monitoring, you would only have to stay in Turkey for 8 days.

Other places in UK also do monitoring but I'm not sure if you mention gender selection, probably not?!

Actually I'dve thought any IVF clinic. I donated eggs 6 years ago & was able to do that in the same city, I chose a private clinic as the NHS hospital took a lot lot longer -more appointments, paperwork - & also refused to tell me if the outcome had been succesful for the receivers. Stupid NHS. I wonder if that clinic would give me a discount now?! - All I got 'paid' were travel costs & a big bunch of flowers

i agree lol why make us travel and spend all that money when it could be spent here!!! Bet they will start doing it here in 20years when i am like 46 and prob already have grandchildren!!! here is what the sydney ivf clinic have on their website i cant beleive they had it prior 2 2005 if only i had known

We suspended our sex selection program in February 2005 following the release of an opposing clinical practice guideline (based on moral reasons) by the Australian Health Ethics Committee.

I was thinking that too this morning & I'll be so jealous if people start getting it on the NHS or at least without having to leave the country... then again if I've got my DS by then I guess I wouldn't care. Tho I could've avoided all this GD which would've been nice.

What a bummer!  They closed up the legal loophole for sperm separation with IUI just recently here - it never came under the embryology laws.  Did a bit of research on that and now they have got to have a licence.  The updated statute law is just about to be passed.  Some girls have helped me and said that IVF/PGD was more successful than sperm separation and IUI anyway, so could still have spent a lot of money either way.

I can understand there being rules for GS but they can make laws and exceptions so that their fears are not founded on why people want GS but they won't do it.  Drafting it in such a way would not be able to offend anyone but they still let people have abortions up until 24 weeks and you can't tell me none of those are based on gender.

It's the same in Australia. It makes a mockery of the law doesn't it.

BTW have you thought of Russia? Someone here is doing IVF/PGD there.

PLAN B - Yes I thought of Russia.  I was just looking at EU options first and foremost.  DH doesn't want to go to Russia - I've heard there are not many English speaking people over at the clinic and it makes it difficult and it is only legal if you have 1 or 2 of the same sex - not sure which - but either way, we would be alright to go there in that case.  I also hear the travelling time is very similar to Turkey.  I have no idea whatsoever on the cost though so if you get any information on that, please post it here as it's another option for people to consider who can't afford the time and travel to America.  Thanks very much.

Re: Investigating EU options - hope this helps

Hi I hate to be a kill joy in all this but my hospital in Turkey also in Istanbul where my Dr is famous worldwide for IVF made it perfectly clear that sex selection for family balancing purposes is illegal in the whole of Turkey and told me to tell my friends not to go there.

As my hospital play it by the book I would imagine that is correct but would be glad to be wrong. However I know that the other hospital I nearly went to do not always play things by the book but that matters little if they give you what you want.

If I did not have my hospital I would still go to the other hospital legal or not. I may still go there if I get pregnant with a boy naturally as would not be able to go to mine as would not be willing to put back boys.

I just wouldn't take their word for it knowing them like I do!! Be interesting to find out for sure though!

I imagine it is not just a EU thing but the government in Turkey is making its own stand about it.

    Let me know!!

    Take care love Karen xxx
