I was wondering if there was a test to see if my husband has more male sperm or female sperm so I can see what my chances are for having a girl and then I could decide if trying naturally is the way to go or if I should look in to something else.

    Thanx for you help!!!!!!!

I second this question!  My DH comes from a family of all boys for 3 generations.  I'm wondering if he even has any x sperm!  We're thinking about MS, but I'm afraid there won't be enough sperm left after sorting out the y's.

I'm interested in this.  I'm from the UK though and wonder if we could send it somewhere....!  We're looking at IVF/PGD in March/April next year but like the first post, want to see what the "split" in the sperm is like first.

I spoke to a dr. the other day about this and he said that you can test to get the ratio of boys versus girls.  He said it costs about $400 here in the US and it just gives you what % are females and what % are males.  I guess the sperm starts out 50/50 but that doesn't mean that when you try to conceive it still is 50/50.  I think men generate new sperm like every 90 days or something strange like that.

As much as I know, process of spematogenesis is producing male and female sperm thru the process of spermatogenesis via splitting of the parent cell to two.  So, the ratio is allways close to 50/50. FISH analisis confirmed this very many times.

I know that there is a clinic in CA (Fertility institutes; doctors Steinberg and Peck) offering this kind of test.  They claim that sperm can contain disproportional amount of female and male sperm.  I am curious to know how they come up with this, since every other source is pointing in the 50/50 direction.  Also, there was someone on this forum who applied for sperm ratio analysis and they asked in adwance the gender the couple is trying for.  I suspect that this kind of information would affect their objectivity.

I would love to hear DR. Potter's oppinion as well.

I just thought i should share 2 of my friends storys as it might be useful. My friend has 4 girls and her husband ate medication to produce more girl sperm and reduce boy sperm. He had to take the medicine 3 months prior to trying for a baby.  She is now pregnant with her baby boy. And another firend did the same to have a girl after having 2 boys. she gave birth to her daughter 3 months ago. The website id www.bmgdesire.com.  I rang the doctor and am a going to see him myself to discuss having a son. It is cheaper than IVF and from what my friends have said they sware by this drs medication that gave them the child they wanted. Has anyone else tried this method. p.s DR is currently in UK

This web side does not claim that they change XX and XY ratios they clim that they make one or the other more active.

There are many vitamines  and supplements that can change PH of the sperm and make XY or XX more active.  It looks like this is what they are doing.

Re: is there a way to test Sperm???

There is a test for checking the X/Y ratio of sperm, called a FISH test.  Any genetics lab can do this test.  However, every man has virtually 50/50 X/Y sperm; as the previous poster mentioned, this is almost guaranteed because sperm are formed by the splitting of an XY parent cell.

MicroSort performed a study on men who had fathered only one gender, and had at least three children.  Those men all had 50/50 sperm.

Happy [:)] Re: is there a way to test Sperm???

Do we know if some men have stronger x or y sperm, or if maybe some men have x or y sperm that for some reason do not survive? Because it really does seem that there is something that causes some families to produce one gender predominantly over the other.

boycrazy - That site's interesting. It seems a bit too good to be true but maybe combined with a good sway it helps tip the odds?

I know it seems that way from the point of view from an individual family, but if you look at population data, we really see the number of same-gender families distributed almost exactly the way you would expect from pure 50/50 chance.   If there was something causing some families to be predisposed to having only one gender, we would see fewer than expected mixed-gender families; and we don't.

Yes I am sure you are right. I guess it just seems that way when you are on the receiving end of all one gender, (along with all dh family) But yes I do understand that it is like the toss of a coin.

FISH could be done but the ratio is going to be 50:50 so don't waist your money.  In the past as part of the MicroSort clinical trial we did FISH to check the gender ratios pre- and post- MicroSort.  Even when the DH had more than 3 offstrping of one gender the ratios were still essentially 50:50.
