Advice for a boy to be mom?

    Hi ladies-

I have 2 girls and a boy on the way, due in October.

Other than tucking the penis down in the diaper and covering it right away during a diaper change, what do I need to know?  I feel completely clueless Embarrassed

Do boys need diaper cream?  Can you wipe them anyway or is it still front to back?

I just read the "where to shop" post and that will be helpful for the future.  I have bought soo much blue already in preperation that this little one is set for the first 6 months Happy  With it being #3 I am not expecting many gifts other than the few hospital visitors or people that are like, "it is their first boy, they must not have a thing."

Any advice or help you can give would be great--from moms that have been there and done that.

    Thank you!!

As for Diapers it is really important to keep the diapers really clean. I had my first son when I was 15 and I was probably not as good about diapers as I should have been. He got an infection in his penis. My third also got one but it was because he had a lump of skin that had shed (that is what the doctor told me) under the top layer of skin. Gross I know but it was fine for almost a year. Then one day he had a penis the size of a ping pong ball. All red and yucky. I know TMI. But these kinds of things can happen.

Other than that I don't think as babies there is a lot of differences. I wouldn't know though.

When they grow up expect bugs and other crawly things to come for visits. My boys bring me some wild stuff.

You can wipe boys in any direction....and you almost have to to get all the "wrinkles" clean...other than that I haven't had too may problems in the diaper area of boys...other than making sure the creases in the front of the legs at the tops are clean and dry...and also directly under the penis...if you have him circumsized it can be a bit difficult to clean them for a few days, but it gets easier...good luck!!

I don't know how many boy moms on here have had this one happen but Beware the "Baby Erection". I had no idea that baby boys could have them but they do. It totally freaked me out when DS1 was 2 weeks old.

I was shocked at the baby erection too. My son would get one everytime he stretched. Weird I know. My second son rarely had one.

My only advice would be to treat your baby boy just like your baby girls.  Love him, hold him lots, sing to him, etc.  I think lots of people think boys should be tough and they treat them differently as babies.  I think there have actually been studies where they have found that baby boys get held less and interracted with less. Love on that little boy like there's no tomorrow and he will pay you back a thousand times!

    Hi there,

When your son gets a little older and stops using diapers

I would strongly suggest that you make him comf by sitting down and peeing

I wish I had learned my first DS this at an early age!! Would have made my cleaning life easier...

When they are tired and get up in the middle of the night for a pee,

not all of it goes in the toliet, so better if they learn to sit down as a routine.

(then maybe you would want them to stand up at a public toilet that is less clean, but then

you are with them so you can help)

Sitting down, and washing hands afterwards - I have to say that to my little guys every day LOL!

Like pp said - you can wipe a boy in any direction, but it helps to gently pull the skin taut around the scrotum to make sure you get in all the wrinkles.  Also, wiping the head of the penis, too.  I also used Aquaphor on the boys' diaper rashes (and a layer of Desitin on top of that if it was bad).  My ds2 liked to "check to make sure he was still a boy" (grab his penis) when I changed his diaper a lot.  I think - well, I hope this is normal.  He's a normal kid now anyway!  I don't notice dd doing this, so I'm not sure if this is a boy thing, or just a my-ds2-thing. I noticed that the boys' diapers always got soaked in the front, and with dd it's directly down or in the back. I missed a lot of wet diapers with dd until I figured that one out.  And prepare to sleep with Hotwheels cars. I find them in my bed at least once a week.  It makes me smile everytime.Love Ya!  Congrats!
