First of all I wanted to thank everyone for the baby, BFP, pink, and all sorts of dust as well as your prayers for this month.  I highly doubt I am pregnant though.  To make a long story short I had posted awhile back in April about getting my bloodwork done and my OBGYN told me that everything was normal.  I went on my merry way but yet I am still not pregnant so I decided to send my lab results over to a family friend that is an OBGYN.

He called me last night and said that I am textbook case of PCOS!!!  I have no clue why my doctor didn't catch that.  My testosterone was on the high end and even flagged as high.  My LH (14.82) was 3 times more than my FSH (3.08) which is also the first sign of PCOS.

He has known me my whole life and told me this is why I struggle with weight loss and my weight in general.

On the plus side he has an "in" with Dr. Maud Doherty the other of The Fertility Handbook and I should know what day my appointment is in August sometime today!!...

I have a couple of questions though for anybody that has this or is familiar with it.  Have you taken Metformin?  Does it have side effects or what does it do to you?  I understand that most PCOS patients are insulin resistant which explains alot for my weight but I don't know how Metformin works with infertility.  Do you know the success rate of Metformin used in combo with Clomid?

What can I expect to go through, just in general, with seeing an infertility specialist.  Is there anything that I should do or bring with me to help me better prepare?  I am going to take next month off from TTC should I still temp and use my Ovacue to track my cycle even though I am not trying?  I figured the more information I give her the better right?

I am just at a loss right now and I wish I could have done something earlier but I have to hope for the best.  Since he classified me as text book maybe this will be easy to fix.  I also have to hold out hope that maybe I did release an egg this month and I am just lucky and will get pregnant.  I don't think that will happen but I can always pray right!

Thank you for any advice or suggests!

Re: Just diagnosed w/ PCOS - Questions.

I'm gonna answer on this thread just incase someone else needs this info too...

Metformin is a drug used by diabetics.  It is to help with the insulin resistance.  Once insulin levels get back to "somewhat" normal, it can help a women ovulate.  Even if you get a period every month, that doesn't mean you are actually ovulating.

There are side effects.  You will see what they are from the package insert.  I had problems with it.  I don't like saying what problems people can have on it, because sometimes we can create symptoms when we know a drug is supposed to do one thing or the other.  So my advice is stay away from the package insert until you start experiencing symptoms and then you can check to see if it's normal...ya know?

They are seeing great sucess with Met and Clomid.  When insulin gets under control, women with PCOS can lose weight.  That is the key with PCOS, getting the weight off.  Then ovulating resumes and it is all one big circle.  Everything has to start working properly to be sucessful.

Yeah I don't have diabetes but I am overweight so hopefully I can drop weight and everything will go back to normal.  I have been reading like crazy today and that seems to be the best plan.

I am on a mission now though as I can't believe this is affecting me having babies!  UGH!!!!

I have heard a lot of success stories and the fact that I would be on Clomid makes me smile for multiples and for getting a girl!!!

Re: Just diagnosed w/ PCOS - Questions.

I have pcos, too. I am on Metformin 1500mg a day. Metformin will regulate your insulin levels better, and allow you to process sugars correctly. This also can help regular your cycles, but didn't do that for mine. I still require ovulation induction drugs such as clomid or femara. I took clomid for 7 months, with no success. I am now on femara, and doing IUI this cycle. Side effects for met are mostly tummy problems. Diarrhea is the main concern and it is extremely annoying to say the least. It usually settles down when your body gets use to the meds. I would continue to temp and such, even if you are on a ttc break. That way you know where you're at in your cycle at all times. My RE just double checked my hormone levels and changed me from the clomid to femara, and now added IUI. If this isn't successful soon, we'll add other drugs such as gonal F or follistim. But, hopefully it doesn't get that far. Feel free to ask me any other questions. I was dx in nov 2007, so I've been doing this for a while. I knew I was pcos long before that, but was never tested. It's really not too devastating and you can usually conceive easily with a little help.

I took met and got pg within amonth of trying it. I had mild PCOS. Start on the met gradually like taking once every night for 2- 3 days and gradually bulding it up to 2-3 times a day or as your doc advices. It made me EXTREMELY sleepy. I got off it once i got pregnant. Let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks for that info!  Were you on Clomid at all?  Has PCOS affected you in any other way besides fertility?
