Has anyone ever ordered a cupcake cake?

I ordered two.  One for my ds's birthday party at school and one for the kindergarten graduation.  I have never done them before, but the school requires cupcakes instead of "cake" because it's less messy I guess.  Apparently you just pick your cupcake and pull apart....

I have seen them in different designs like a butterfly or a race car...etc...they are really neat...the kids seem to like them...they may seem less messy but usually have way more icing etc on them...but the kids really like the idea of eating with their hands...no need for plates and forks...just napkins...lots and lots of napkins...LOL

 Where have I been? I've never heard of these.  Do all the bakeries make these now?

I never heard of them either.  Yesterday when I called the bakery, I said I wanted to order special cupcakes for a graduation like blue and black icing or something with little graduation caps on them...LOL...and the baker suggested this breakaway cake so we could write a message.  I thought..."how neat"!!

 I bought one of these for our superbowl party this year (Go Giants!!!).  It was shaped like a football and really cute.  Howeve, as pp mentioned, there is a ton of frosting and can get quite messy.  It didn't bother me though because my favorite part of cake is the frosting.

I have seen them in the bakery at the grocery store!

My mom and sister bought one of these recently.  My sister made a really cute cake for my birthday.  It was flowers that you put together into the shape of a flowering can.  My mom's is frogs and she will make it for DS2's birthday.

These are totally fun and very easy to entertain with. But the frosting is DISGUSTING and messy. It tastes awful if you get them from the grocery store bakery (like Vons, Safeway, etc.), and they tend to be the ones that specialize in them.  Seriously, the frosting is hideous and I cringe every time my kids eat one of the cupcakes because of what's in it.  If anyone has made these themselves, I'd love the frosting recipe - it has to be thick enough not to drip down between the cupcakes, which is the challenge.  It's a brilliant idea - they just have to come up with nontoxic frosting! :-)

They are using a whipped cream icing on my cake because I specifically said I didn't want the "mix" kind....Hope it works out!

If this cupcake thing is messy then my childs teacher is going to just LOVE me....

OMG How cool are they? I can't believe what people come up with! 

I bought one for my son's end of season soccer party.  They are so cute but they do have tons of frosting.  I always order cakes with whipped topping versus the buttercream.  It works just and good on the cupcakes...the only problem is that whipped topping dosen't hold the dark colors as well.  Other than that it is a lot less "toxic" than the thick buttercream frosting.   I always get my cakes from the walmart bakery...better priced and I normally get exactly what I want!!!

 As a cake decorator, I can say YES -- buttercream frosting is nasty!!  Its made out of crisco -- barf.  However, you have to be careful of the whipped in the heat.  It breaks down a lot faster than the buttercream.
