Viral bronchitis-----UPDATE

Have your kids ever had this?  My ds's do.  My oldest has it the worst.  His fever is staying at 102.5 with Tylenol and motrin.  His cough is terrible.  I thought he was wheezing so I took him to the Dr yesterday and after waiting for two hours he said it was just viral.  My poor boy is SICK!!  When he feels like he needs to cough he holds it back because it hurts his throat.  He sounds like a seal barking when he does cough.  Last night was a bad night.  When he woke up at 3 he said "Mommy, please look in my mouth and tell these germs to get out"   I said "I can try but how will I know if they are out"  He came back with "God gave Mommies special eyes so they know where germs are so their kids don't get sick and when you had your surgery these germs knew that you didn't feel good so they jumped in my body when you weren't looking, they are tricky little things"  I love hearing how he thinks things work!  He was so serious too!  Those tricky little germs.

I hope your boys feel better.  Childrens' rationale for how things happen is certainly amazing (and entertaining at times!)

Lol- tricky little germs. And how sweet that he thinks they snuck into him b/c you weren't feeling good- what a protective little guy. Hope he gets to feeling better soon.

Wow...sounds like croup if he's barking when coughing....

My kids have not had this yet....but they have had the croup so I am much more familiar with that.....either way, it's so hard seeing your kids in pain and sick.  Lots of hugs for your little guy!

Ds is not better so I called the Dr today.  His Dr was back so they left a message with his symptoms to see what his Dr wanted to do.  The nurse called back within 5 minutes and said to come in right away.  We went straight in and the Dr said that his lungs were so tight that he was going to do a breathing treatment on him and that we were not leaving until he could breathe better.  He told me that he would not talk bad about a colleague but if this were to ever happen again to trust my mommy instinct and take him to the ER.  He also said that we were lucky nothing happened between Sat and today.  It has gone from viral bronchitis to walking pneumonia.  Poor little guy has to have breathing treatments every 4 hours around the clock.  He has him on an antibiotic and decongestant and he wants him to have tylenol and motrin every 4 hours until his fever gets below 101.  The other Dr better thank his lucky stars that nothing bad happened to my baby because of his neglect.

Oh no!  Did they put him on a steroid at all?  Prenisone helps my son when his breathing is bad because of his asthma.  Sorry he is so sick!

Yeah they have him on a steriod too.   I don't rememeber the name I think it was prednisone.  I'm glad it helped your son.  I hope the little guy feels better soon.  His preschool graduation in on Thursday.

I just got over this exact same thing. I felt 1000 times better within 2 days, although the cough hung on for a little while longer. I hope your ds has a speedy recovery, as well. Esp for his graduation.

OMG!  How awful for you and your little guy!  You are such a great mommy taking such great care of your children !!!!  Poor little guy, I hope he feels better soon.

 Oh no!!! poor little guy! That makes me so mad about the first doctor. If he had just done something he would not be so sick now  (((hugs))) i hope he is feeling better soon

JoJo, I think viral bronchitis IS croup (maybe you can ask your DH for us?!)   I don't think that all kids get the barking cough, but I think the virus does different things for different people.  Also, when really little ones get bronchitis, it is called bronchiolitis, but is basically the same thing.  Then, it is called RSV.  Unfortunately, I have lots of experience with both croup and RSV.  Once a kid gets that croupy cough once, they are prone to get it with each and every bad cold from there on out.  My 8-yr-old STILL gets a croupy cough.
