results from beta HCG from NT scan blood draw tells GENDER

   I wrote a post a couple years ago about a study that I read that said that free range Beta HCG that is drawn usually at the NT scan can tell Gender results.  I read it in the oxford journals.  The original post here in IG was called " betahcg MOM from blood draw at NT scan tells GENDER"

The basis is that the beta number is higher for girls, averaging 1.09 and lower for boys, averaging .79.  So I took down all the girls who wrote in their numbers over the last couple of years, and I made a graph to see how many were right vs. wrong.  I came up with the result that the blood test predicted the right gender for 17 women, and was wrong for 11.  Some women did not come back and report what gender they had, so I didn't include them. So in conclusion, I think that even though it is not fool proof, I think it is a better indicator than the ring over the belly trick LOL  Also, there may be some errors due to drs drawing the blood very early or very late.  The NT blood draw is supposed to be between 10-14weeks. So, even though my results were in the "wrong" category, I think I will have ask for the results of this test if we have another baby. It is interesting to see where you line up. Also, I noticed some people had their blood drawn much later around week 16 which may have messed with the results. But anyway here they are:

The averages for girls were:  1.47  the averages for boys were:  1.03, if my math is correct!

OK so for me here are my results:

1st Trimester NT Screen Results:

Free Beta hCG MoM - 1.2 or (60.74 ng/ml)

PAPP-A MoM - 0.57 or (1.17 miU/ml)

NT MoM - 0.13 Delta or (1.6)

2nd Trimester Quad Screening

AFP MoM - 0.74 or (29:28 IU/ml)

Free Beta hCG MoM - 1.24 or (12:32 ng/ml)

Inhibin A MoM - 4.56 or (782.32 pg/ml)

uE3 MoM- 0.81 or (4.344 nmol/L)

So based on the below theory I indicate

• AFP is lower in female pregnancies; median of 0.89 MoM for a female fetus compared to 0.96 Mom for a male fetus.
• Free b-hCG is higher in female pregnancies; median of 1.09 Mom for a female fetus compared to 0.79 MoM for a male fetus.
• Inhibin A is higher in female pregnancies; median of 1.04 MoM compared to median of 0.93 MoM for a male fetus.
•  NT is lower in female pregnancies median of 0.99 MoM compared to a median of 1.04 for a male fetus
• Papp-A (First Trimester) higher in female and (First Trimester)  lower in male fetuses

• PAPP-A  (Second Trimester) lower in a Female fetus  and Higher in a Male Fetus (couldn't find any MoM #'s only this will keep looking)

• OK got the skinny on Papp-A still no MoM #'s but definitely a better idea of what to expect we need to know which trimester your Papp-A was done in 1st or second or both

Your post is what had me CONVINCED I was having another boy LOL.  After my results came back, I was devastated to say the least....but, she is ALL girl.  Have had 4 ultrasounds to confirm it! My NT results were: HCG Mom: .62 and PAPP-A Mom was .36!

Yes, I agree that looks like a girl to me too. It's all a big guess, but I'd rather obsess over real numbers than old wives tales. KWIM?

ICAM I definitely think there is something to it. Maybe if it isn't true with the NT results the maybe in the second trimester with the Quad results.

Maybe you need more then one level to match? Just letting my brain go LOL

It just seems to hold more true for the second trimester results at least that is what I have been reading on the net.... Either way thanks for your harwork and research!

Quad screen results: HCG .77  AFP: .69

Since I am an obsessed lunatic with this study I have found the following:

It seesm to be those it was correct for, are those who had 2 or more MoM's in the range so 2 lows for a boy and 2 highs for a girl

People who had 1 high and one low were 50/50 as far as gender

IM determined to prove this theory LOL

 HCG does not.  That is definitely a boy number.

PAPP-A 1.17

AFP 1.47

Beta HCG 0.33

Estriol 0.86

Inhibin 1.09

 Per the theory, this seems to indicate boy.  Any thoughts?

Yes your HCG does not but it seems the Hcg is the MOST faulty one of them all! IM just trying to establish a pattern to see which fits/works better etc... Is it more true if one or more #'s match
