Gavin Thomas has arrived!!....8lbs 14 oz and 21 3/4 inches...Birth Story and maybe TMI

On December 13th, 2010 at 2:52 pm our son was born... This was our induction date but when I got to the hospital I was already contracting 5 minutes apart and 3 cms. The plan was to break my water and start Pitocin, but when the doctor checked me he said the baby was way too high and he couldnt break my water due to high risk of a prolapsed cord. So I couldnt be walking around until he moved into the birth canal. However they did let me sit up in the bed with the foot lowered which allowed me to be in a complete sitting position... that was much better than lying down. At 11:30 am my water broke on its own. I was 5 cm but the baby still had not lowered enough to be up. At 1:00 pm I was dilated to 6 and took 1 cc of Stadol which lasts almost an hour. At 2:00 I was 7 cm and asked for more but my hubby was such a good labor coach that he talked me through it and I went on to labor unmedicated. At this time they let me turn around in the bed and lean over the back of the bed which was lifted and on my knees while my hubby rubbed my back. This was what I needed and what Gavin needed to move down! At 2:40 I started pushing but was having difficulty...his heart beat started dropping during the contractions and they gave me oxygen. I could tell the doctor was worried and I wondered why I was struggling to get him out. The doctor checked on the baby's position and realized he had come down the birth canal on his side facing up so when his head was delivered the rest of him was stuck sideways and under pressure. The doctor had to reach and manually bend the baby's shoulders and pull them together and then his chest got stuck. ( I felt ALL of this) The never told me to stop pushing but said we need to get this baby out. At the same time the doctor had to cut me to make room. I felt alot of burning but was glad to feel the baby moving down. After 12 minutes of pushing that seemed like forever, Gavin Thomas was born at 2:52 p.m. He didnt cry right away because of the squeezing that occurred on his chest, but thankfully finally cried out. I tried to nurse him right away but every time I tried he grimaced and cried. I was afraid there was something wrong with him as my girls always aggressively nursed right after birth, but they didnt realize until hours later that his left collar bone had been broken during birth.... He is doing really great now and doesnt seem to be bothered by the break, which should heal on its own in 2-3 weeks. We just have to be gentle with his left side and now that I know why it hurt to nurse I use the football hold on my right side, and he nurses like a charm now. I am in love :) Good luck to all the December moms! Just wanted to share our story.

Congratulations Gwynne!  Your son is beautiful and I LOVE his name!  I'm so sorry to hear about the challenges you had in labor and the break to his collarbone...but I'm glad he's healing and nursing well.  We go through a lot to bring these little treasures into the world and it's totally worth it!

Enjoy him!  I imagine your family is on cloud nine!

Thank you everyone for the well wishes! Gavin has been a dream baby, he is so laid back and he has 5 sisters swarming around him, lol! He is going to be so spoiled, but that's okay! Looking forward to hearing more birth stories! Good luck to all!

I'm so sorry I havent said congrats yet hun, just checked ingender as haven't been on it for ages, laptop had to be sent off for repair, tried the other day to get on ingender but couldn't get on the whole site for some reason. So glad to here your lil man has arrived, fab news! sorry he had a rough time entering our world but the main thuing is his all ok now, hope you had an amazing xmas, with lots of special baby moments and happy family times :-)

I'm 33 weeks + now...34wks Thurs, feeling ok, lots of braxton hicks but had that with all my babies, baby has been on the small side but think she's catching up a bit now, Est weight atm is 4lb  1 oz  last wk (32 wks +) at my last growth scan, my 1st son was born at 33wks and was 4lb 2oz so think she's about the right size ( for me anyway) 2nd son was born at 36 wks weighing 5lb 7.5 oz  . Hoping she will manage to reach 7lb odd, which will be my biggest, but as long as she's ok, then whatever size she is...she'll be,   Gavin Thomas was a lovely healthy size...well done you ! ....Enjoy   take care for now

Thank you!!! So glad to hear you are doing well, and the time is going by so fast! Your little baby girl will be here before you know it! I haven't been on IG much lately either...Ive had my hands full and been distracted by the new little man in my life, lol! I'm loving it!
