Twins - Question about membrane

Hi ladies, I just have a question regarding the membrane between twins.  The doctors said they think that the twins are identical because they cannot see a membrane between them.  They share the same placenta (thus at risk for TTTS).  They are still not sure if they are identical or if they implanted that close together.  I was 8w at my first u/s and they said they didn't see a membrane, but who's to say there wasn't one.  The doctor said it could be too early to tell.  The twins were one on top of the other - could this be a reason for not really being able to see a membrane?

I am worried sick that the twins are mo/mo twins - because the success rate is not good.  Anybody have an early u/s and not see a membrane - only to have one at 12 weeks and find out they are both in different sacs?

Any advice / stories would be greatly appreciated.

I've known at least 2 people personally who didn't get their mono/di confirmation until after 10wks. It is sometimes difficult to see so early.

Congratulations on your twin pregnancy, I too have identical twins!! My first u/s when we discovered I was carrying twins was at 10 weeks and the membrane was very thin and wispy like, but it was visible. In the sonogram it's hard to see, but during the u/s we could see it although it was very thin. Maybe if I would have had an earlier u/s, the membrane may not have been detected, who knows.

Anyway, I've read on a lot of the forums about twins and there have been multiple ladies with the same issue only to go back at a later date and find the membrane. It's great that they're aware of the posibility of mo/mo twins and the risks associated with them so you'll get optimal care.

thanks!!  I had my 12 week ultrasound - and the found the membrane!!  Could not be happier!  Now I am just hoping for my boys... but I guess as long as they are happy and healthy, I shouldn't complain.

I am glad you got good news !! My first ultrasound at 14 weeks showed a very visible membrane but later in my pregnancy you couldn't even see it !
