Thumb Sucking

Colby was sucking her thumb in the womb, as we saw on the ultrasounds, and now that she is almost 2 months, I can tell this would be a great pacifier for her, but she can't seem to get her thumb in her mouth.  Has anyone else encountered this?  It seems funny to me that she could do it in utero but not now.  It almost seems as if her thumb isn't big enough, lol.  The pacifier doesn't seem to have the same calming effect.

Thanks in advance,

jena

Have you tried different brands of pacifiers?  My last son would only use the Mam brand.  Thumb sucking can turn out to be a bad thing because you can break a baby from a pacifier but you can't take away their thumb.  I know someone whose daughter sucks her thumb and she's 5 years old.  It has caused her top teeth to stick outward.  I had to work with my son a little bit to get him to take the pacifier, but it sure has been a life-saver in the store.

The only one she will take is the one I got from the hospital, the soothie.  I know thumb sucking can be bad, but there are so many opinions on it out there.  The thing about pacifiers is that they fall out and she freaks as soon as it does, lol.  I am at a loss, I know if she could suck her thumb she would probably be sleeping a lot longer at night.  Oh well, I will just pray this phase is soon over, thanks for the advice.

Hey.  Ella was a thunb sucker on the ultrasound too.  She found it again twice on the day she was born, but now her hands are a little new to her.  I can see she is trying to find it, but can't coordinate enough to put it in her mouth.  I guess in utero things are cramped and they have their hands by their mouths a lot.  I love to see her sucking her thumb, but I'm sure when she's four I'll wish she would stop.

Malia will only take the Soothie pacifiers too.  Very big and green and ugly, but she loves them.  I heard not to physically remove their thumbs from their mouths, because they will only do it more, but to try to supplement it with something else.  Makai started that for a while when he was a few months old, and I would just automatically put his pacifier in after every feeding so he wouldn't have the option of finding his thumb.  We took it away at 8 months with no problem.  Hope that helps.
