I was wondering about gestational diabetes and autism. Has anyone had GD with a previous pregnancy, and did your child have autism? Does anyone have it now, and how are you regulating it?
Thanks so much
Taffy

YIKES!  you had me go look and there is a link!  How scary! Tongue Tied

Gestational diabetes

Diabetes in the mother during pregnancy is a significant risk factor for autism; a 2009 meta-analysis found that gestational diabetes was associated with a twofold increased risk. Although diabetes causes metabolic and hormonal abnormalities and oxidative stress, no biological mechanism is known for the association between gestational diabetes and autism risk

That is so scary! I had it with both kids

DS wasn't treated (I had no idea I had it and I had dumb doctors obviously)

DD was regulated with insulin shots and a bit of the diet but not much

Neither of my kids have Autism

Honestly, I think if they look hard enough they will find a link with anything and Autism.

My eldest son is Autistic and I did NOT have GD.  I have even read an article that having a syntocin drip during an induction is also linked to an increased risk of ASD in that child and that if someone in your immediate family has an autoimmune disorder, you also have an increased risk.

To be honest, i adore my son, he is hard work but i would never swap him for all the world....he makes us better people for being around him.

I wish you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy

 Taffy,

I had gd through out my pregnancy with my second son, and yes, he is autistic. While that sounds very glum, he is now 17  years old, exeptionally brilliant, but I do have to home school him. He has a lot of sensory issues (florescent lighting and ambient noise drives him crazy) but you learn to work around those things.

I have had 4 live births, no GD, and one of my sons has autism.  I think since they have no idea what causes autism they're looking for any links they can find.
