12 wks isn't always too early to tell...

FYI:  I had a nuchal translucency u/s at 12 weeks exactly. During that u/s I could have sworn that I saw boy parts(not necessarily the "turtle," but definitely something protruding between the legs).  I was very excited because after two daughters, a boy was what we were praying for.  When I asked the tech, she said, "Well it does look like something, but I can't say for sure because sometimes at this stage a penis and clitoris can look pretty similar"  However, on one of the pics she put an arrow and typed in "What is this??????"  She definitley got my hopes up for a boy.

Well after talking to many friends, I learned that I should not have been too excited because they all said it was way too early to tell.  Still, I couldn't get the notion out of my head that the tech thought something WAS there too. At my regular 17 week appt, I was so bummed that I was put into the room w/out the ultrasound machine.  I begged my OB to give me an u/s  because I was just dying to know the sex of my baby.

She so nonchalantly answered, "What do you mean? Didn't you find out at your 12 week nuchal u/s?"

I then told her that I thought it looked like there was something between the legs, but that I'd also been told by everyone that it was just too early to tell.

She said, "Well everyone isn't up to date on the latest technology available."

She also said that she found out the sex of both her babies at 12 weeks, and if the tech and I thought we saw boy parts, then she'd put money on the fact that it was a boy.  Well, I still took this w/ a grain of salt as I didn't want to get my hopes up too high and then be let down.

We had the big u/s at 19 weeks and found out it was indeed a boy.

I hope this helps some of you who are in the crazed state of mind I was inHappy.

Congrats on your baby boy!  How excited you must be!

I think it is definitely possible to tell the sex at 12 weeks but I think there are wayyyyy too many techs out there who are not up to date on the new technology.  So I don't even askHappy Wink....although I have been tempted on more then one occasion...LOL.

this is a big subject over at the ultrasound board. Some techs say you can tell by boy two lines up and down and girl one line going horizontal.

Of course they all have nubs around that time but your baby developes at a different rate, so it just might have been more distinctive on which way it was going to go.

There are just too many mistakes made before 14wks, I would be on pins and needles until my 20wk scan! lol I was told gender at 15wks and it was confirmed again today at 21wks. but it was very clear the first time.

And like you said, not all techs are up to date. so some are guessing with old machines and not much experience, giving moms false hope and wrong "guesses".

Glad you got to find out early!!!! and congrats on the little boy!!!!!

CONGRATS to you! You must be so excited to get your little boy.

My doc could also see at 12 weeks the gender of DC#1 !!  I think it just really depends on where you go and who's doing it.

Can you share and please post the picture of your 12 week ultrasound gender shot?  It  would be great to see!

 congrats again!

Socamom,

I hope this works!  Here is the u/s picture at 12 weeks. I agree w/ what everyone has said so far.  In my case the nuchal u/s was done at a genetics clinic w/ a higher level machine.  I think that that could make the difference.  The u/s machines in most of our ob's offices aren't necessarily the higher level machines.

Congratulations!  I think it is possible to tell but I think mistakes occur more often at this stage.

No, it isn't always too early to tell, BUT It is alot more likely to get it guessed wrong and I would rather NOT KNOW than BE TOLD WRONG!!!!

Here in WA the Dr has the latest machines and is apparently the best in the buisness.

She told me I was having a boy at 12 weeks and 3 days.

19 weeks scan indeed a boy.

Ben was born 10 months ago.

Apparently it is 90% sure if it is a boy and 80% girl.

Lets pray next time she tells me GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!! How I long to hear those words!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on your bundle of blue.
