and I am not sure what to do. He has been fussy last night and he has been eating a lot every 2-3 hours and when I feed him and lay him down to get ready to burp him he spits up thick white milk and some times it will have stuff in it. When he feeds his nose sounds like it's conjested and I don't know what to do. He is only 2.5 weeks old and he is breastfeeding so not sure why he is sick. His diapers are also like water and runny. Should I take him to the ER or call and make an appointment for Monday. I don't think there is anything they can give him given that he is so small. Thanks Heart

First, I am sorry he's sick Maria. Second, I don't know how breastfeeding is but when dd was 2 weeks old she did the same thing and would throw up because she couldn't breathe from the congestion. I don't know if you remember or not but she ended up being allergic to milk and I had to put her on soy formula. Does he have any other signs of sickness besides congestion? She was really fussy, really fussy! But there wasn't a fever or anything so that is why doc thought it was the milk and it ended up being true. Do you know if babies can be allergic to breast milk, I don;t have a clue but it seems to me like it would be the same. IDK though.

Sounds like he has a cold. You should keep nursing him on demand (2-3 hours is very normal for a newborn - heck, Paige nursed every 20 minutes! lol)

When small babies get a bit of mucus, it sounds very loud and congested because their passageways are so narrow. But the thick spit-up, frequent demand for feedings and watery diapers are all normal for a breastfed baby.

If he won't wake for feedings, is "floppy" or extra lathargic (more than newborn sleepy) or you become worried and want to reassurance, then by all means call the Dr. or go into urgent care. (JMHO, but avoid ER's at all costs with a newborn unless it's a life or death situation)

hugs Maria. do you think your DS1 might have brought something home? is he sick or has runny nose etc? try to put a humidifier in the room where he sleeps. Cottage cheese type of spit up may also be when he nurses quite often and they don;t have time to fully digest ( we had that sometimes with my DS who spit up a lot) He is in all the photos with bibs. I hope all is well and he gets better soon.

Does he have a fever?

Ava is really congested and spits up like that but it has to do with her reflux. Her diapers were also & still are very watery/runny.  He might be going through a growth spurt too.

I hope he isn't sick :(

SNS, I too think he has a cold and I hope he gets over it soon. Since yesterday he has been feeding a whole lot and he always seems hungry.

Fata, Jerrinwas sick from last Thursday until Tuesday with fever, sneezes and a runny nose but he kept mostly away from Kristofer so not sure. Yesterday and today it felt I was feeding him every hour or so and my nipples are still not better.

Danyel he has no fever which is I guess really good. He is definitely a better eater than Jerrin ever was Stick out tongue

I am sorry he's sick, Maria! That is always so hard for us to deal with as moms. It does sound like he has a cold, though. Just keep nursing him on demand, and try propping him so that his head is elevated. You can also squirt some breastmilk up his nose. Both of those things should help with the congestion. As for the spit-up...you may just have a puker on your hands. As long as he doesn't seem to be in pain (which would make me think reflux issues), you just have to wait that out. My little guy had major puke issues, but it got WAY better around 5.5 months. Good luck hon!

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs" -Thomas Jefferson
