Ava does have reflux and with Madison and Evan I waited until 6 months to introduce anything else.  They were formula fed though.  My mom keeps trying to get me to start her ASAP.  I have read the guidlines and Ava does meet any of them so I am hoping her Dr agrees that she is NOT ready.

Signs that indicate baby is developmentally ready for solids include:

  • Baby can sit up well without support.
  • Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue.
  • Baby is ready and willing to chew.
  • Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development.
  • Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth.

Tell me your stories :)

With my first I started at 4 months, because at the time they said to start between 4-6 months.  With #2 and 3 though I waited until 6 months.  All were EBF.  DD didn't really take to solids until about 8 months.

Yeah I think times have changed so it worries me about my mom watching Ava when I go back to work.  She is the kind of person that will do what she wants regardless of what I tell her. :(  I may end up just putting her in daycare full time.

Same here. #2 and #3 were all on solids by 6 months as well.

Ditto again. She absolutely refused baby food of any kind, though. She was EBF until she could feed herself table food.

I tried a bit of mashed up banana for DS#4 the other day, because he is REALLY interested in other people's food, but even at 6 months he isn't quite ready. He seemed to like the taste okay (no funny faces), but he didn't get much down. So, we'll wait. You really just have to watch your baby's cues.

Ditto that! LOL She's never had any baby food.  We just skipped that and went to soft table foods at 8 months.  She's 10 1/2 months now and is a great eater! Agree

I answered 4 months, but I was told by my lactation consultant to nurse first and then offer the cereal.  The reason being breastmilk has way more to offer than a few tbs of cereal.  Keep in mind that they won't take as much because they were nursed first.  I used to wait about an hr and offer cereal.

All of my kids were EBF through 6 months,  then I introduced bananas, cereal, yogurt (DD just this week).  DS2 didn't really actually eat anything (more than a bite or two) until he was well over one. He never took to the cereal and was quite anemic.  Did any of you other EBF'ers have iron troubles with your babies if they didn't eat cereal or drink any formula?

we started at 6 months, but he didn't really like solids that much.  So he didn't really start eating solids regularly until he was 8 months or so.

  • A huge yes.

I only started Bella on rice cereal around 2 weeks ago and the only reason was because she is definately ready and very eager.  She won't be 6 months old until next week but she is crawling all over the place, sitting up, even using objects to pull her upper body up while on her knees (like her toy basket).  It is crazy.

Even with how active she is we are only giving her a little rice cereal once mid-morning and in the evening when we eat dinner.  I am not in a hurry to introduce other foods yet  If she wasn't where she is developmentally, I would have not started solids.
