My 2 cents on H1N1 from a non-vaccinator

I have had my children vacinated but only with what is on the australian scedule.  It makes me nervous everytime.  My biggest issue with the swine flu vac is that they made it in a few months and I am more worried about the long term side affects that could happen.

I am still on the fence wether or not to get the whopping cough vaccine..

Thank you for your input CC I just hit 22 weeks. I would hate to get really sick and worst case scenario have a baby preterm that might not make it. Or me not make it for my Daughters and Husband I have to get vaccinated, with a heavy heart.

I hate that we all are going through this Sad I'm so saddened for the people who have died from this and those that are sick.

cc I can't remember what province you live in but did you have to wait in a huge line for the shot? They stopped giving the vax here in AB because they were running out and they are now deciding what to do with the little they have left. I feel so helpess right now because I didn't get it done for my kids. Today when I drop my oldest off at Kindergarten all the parents were talking about how it was worth the 2 or 5 or 6 hour wait because in the end they "love their kids" and "this may save their live". I am feeling tremendous guilt for not getting in that line now that they are running out. I was so afraid that my kids would catch something in the line with all those people an many of the clinics were outdoors. Everytime I hear of another fatality I start to worry again. I hope I can get it done soon. Ugggggggh!

I am in Ontario. We were considered part of the high risk/high priority group, as we have a baby under 6 mos old (just squeaked in actually-she is 6 mos today). My oldest son is just under 5 yrs old. So, we were eligible for the whole family.

We waited about 2 hours in line, outside.

As for your family, as I said in my original post, you are indeed likely to catch it. Are you likely to get horribly horribly sick and die? No. You are likely to be in the majority, and have mild symptoms.  Hopefully, the next batch of Vax will be shipped out your way soon.

Okay here I go. CC I am so beside you this has been weighing on my mind heavily. I finally decided today that after LittleFoots post I cannot wait longer. I made an appt with my clinic and this evening at 6:35 myself and 3 lil boys are gonna get the shots luckily we all are able to get it. I am only 12.5 wks so you other post has me a little worried but I have heard the mercury in it is no more than other things we injest I decided though I have to do it for my Isaiah I have had so many breathing problems with him since he was a baby. He has had respitory distress with almost every cold he's had. He uses a neb every time. I have had to use steroids for him etc. So for him his high risk scares the crap outta me more than the unknown and I have seen him have the seasonal so bad he was delerious and counldn't talk so yeah I am doin it.........................1 Question Does anybody know if the seasonal is still needed after this shot bc isn't swine a combo of 4 diff flu strains??

From my understanding they made it in the same amount of time as the regular seasonal flu vaccine.  This vaccine was made the same way they make the yearly seasonal flu vaccine.

As far as I know the seasonal is a different strain then what is in the H1N1 and is not included.

Just updating myself DH and our two Daughters have our tickets to get our vaccine on Sat. We have a window of 1:30-2:00pm I hope the wait is not too terribly long.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is being affected by this mess.

The seasonal flu is different and requires a separate vaccine. Also keep in mind that the seasonal flu can have several strains and the vaccine is formulated with what the researchers believe will be the PREDOMINANT strain. You can still get the flu (influenza B) even if you've been vaccinated.  Likewise, you can still get influenza A even if you get the H1N1 vaccine because that is simply one strain (the predominant strain this year) of that type of flu.

Sunny ~ I'm going today for my shot. I'm hoping they'll give one to my youngest DD as well. My oldest got the mist in school this week, but it's only for school kids in my county.

Best of luck Kelly I hope your DD can get it Pray Do you know how long till the vaccine gives us immunity? Is it right away or does it take some time?

bravo! thanx for your post. some people are taking it lightly. My mom is so against me vaccinating my kids from the H1N1 but I'm so scared. My online friends husband who was healthy as a horse just died a couple of weeks ago from the H1N1 and in out county there is a man in a induced coma and might not make it from the h1n1. they are having a benefit dinner for him this weekend because they can't afford to keep him in the hospital :(

Its to scarry to not get it IMO

I just hope we can get the shot. DS cannot get the mist due to his asthma. My kids are currently sick with colds so they will have to wait till they are well since they will not give the shot to sick people.
