Any idea on how to put the end to thumb sucking? She just started this week, with a vengeance.

She was fist sucking before, but this is dis-gust-ing. It actually does "pop" when I remove it, which I keep doing.

Never had one of these babies before....

Does she take a pacifier? When A started sucking her thumb I gave her a pacifier, and now she much prefers it over her thumb (which means I have to keep going up to put it back in her mouth when she loses it, but oh well...) If it's any consolation, R suckes his thumb with a vengeance for two weeks when he was four months old and then completely lost interest and never did it again (but was a pacifier addict before and after that).

Does she do it all the time or only to self soothe when she is going to sleep?

Ds1 refused a paci but would suck his thumb to go to sleep. When he got older (about 18 months or so) he just stopped doing it.

hoping for anothergirl

My 8 week old is fist sucking and was wondering whether it turns into thumb sucking. If it happens at sleep times you could try wrapping her before she goes to sleep to break the habit.

Baby Boy and Baby Girl and no longer hoping but have a full-term Baby Girl

Probably not the answer you were looking for.... but I always wished my boys were thumbsuckers. I was a thumbsucker and my mom always said i was the most self-pacifying child. Everyone told her I would need braces (I never did). My boys were all about the boob.. would never take a paci, I was desperate for a break and I would literally stick their thumbs in their mouth!! They never did take to it though....

I truly believe that if a baby is sucking their thumb it is comforting to them and I would allow them to do it. Even if it continues until they are much older, they will break the habit eventually.....

However, if you really do not want her sucking her thumb... maybe you can put socks/mittens on for a few days. I am sure she isn't truly 'addicted' to it yet...

I bet she is a great baby then!  My little brother slept through the night at 8 weeks and my mom ran in his room thinking he was dead and there he was sucking his finger, fast asleep.  He was a perfect baby.  Don't mess with perfection!

Me too!  My DD is 5 months and an avid thumbsucker.  We've spent about $50 on binkies/nubies/pacis of every size, color, shape, and brand in hopes of finding one she will tolerate and even love.  No dice!  She gets this look of horror on her face whenever we put one in and tries to spit it out as if it is full of poison.  She started sucking her thumb only when she was almost asleep or waking up to go back to sleep at about 3.5 or 4 months.  Just this week, she has started to put it in to self-soothe at other times besides sleep time.  Although I wanted a binky girl and both of my boys were in love with theirs much past the normal age of them, she is bound and determined to be a thumbsucker.  My dentist says that it shouldn't case too much problem as long as she stops before her baby teeth start to fall out (although I've read other theories too).

And, well it is cute and always available.  If she can self-soothe, then I should be happy, right?  Although she currently will only be soothed in the night by the all-night all-you-can-eat milk buffett, but that is a topic for another post....................

...Not neccesarily... My sister is 21 years old and still sucks her thumb while twirling her hair. Nothing like walking to a frontroom to having her curled up doing it, annoys the crap out of me, lol...

I don't know what I'll do if I end up having a determined thumb sucker. Hmm I won't like it a single bit, but that's for my kids. I have no problem with other's childrens having it if it works for them. Doesn't work for me though, because I get this imagine of my sister in my head and my nerves start jumping..

lol.

No help here- I hope you figure something out though CC. I can feel your pain LOL! Heart When my daughter trys sucking on her fingers I always pull them out and tell her no, sometimes hand her a binky. If she continues to try, I continue to take them out with a stern "no, fingers don't go in mouth, yuck" and she'll usually give up and go do something else...but she's older. As a baby it just took me taking her fingers/hand away from her mouth and offering a binky and she didn't try again.
