 Hi,

I had my regular OB visit today(almost 31 wks). She and the peri thinks that I should get steroids to develop the lungs of the babies as they are gonna be premature most likely. This is because one of the babies is measuring only 16% for her gestational age. I am too scared about the thought of steroids. Did anyone here with twins get these shots. I would really appreciate any info on the shots.

Thanks

I have never had twins, but have heard of this done often if it appears that a mother will deliver early.  GL.  Hope both babies are happy and healthy!

I was admitted to the hospital at 33 weeks and had the steroid shots twice upon arrival. The babies were born at 34 weeks 6 days. The shots are done as a precaution. No problem with anything as far as me or babies concerned. They came out breathing fine.

I have never had twins but my second DS tried to come at 29 weeks, and I was given steriods twice to help with his lung development.  He did not come at 29 weeks but came at barely 35 weeks and had no troubles with breathing no oxygen even needed.  He did not suffer from the steriods, but was able to thrive and come home with us right after delivery!!  If a perinatologist is recommending them I would go for it, they are the high risk baby experts!!  Good luck to you and your twins Pray

Thanks for the reply ladies!! I guess i will just go ahead and get the shot tomorrow. No point in arguing with the experts(peri and OB) :-).

I got the shot at 32 weeks when I was hospitalized with preeclampsia.  The doc didn't even discuss it with me, the nurse just came in the first night with the shot.  I was freaked out too!  Not about the shot, I understood what it was for, but that they thought I needed it!  Like the PP's said, it's more of a precaution.  No harm to do it but big benefit if it's really needed for prematurity.  I didn't have any side effects and ended up carrying my girls to 35.5 weeks.

I had a big growth difference between my girls.  DD1 was 4lb 3 oz at 35w5d and DD2 was 5lb 8 oz.  But they were both healthy and came home with me in 2 days.  No NICU time at all.  Still DD1 is smaller than DD2 which helps with clothes since they wear different sizes.  Other than that she's just fine.  Good luck!

I got my betamethasone shots with my  ID twins at 24 weeks and had them at 34 weeks (11 ounce difference). I agree with PP, the benefits completely outweigh any risks(actually not really aware of any). Hope you can carry them as long as possible.

I forgot to mention that I think they are only good for 2 weeks and they are not helpful after 34 weeks gestation.  So the time to do them would be now.

Hopefully you won't need them but it is reassuring to know they are on board.  GL!
