they don't swim in circles really fast.  it like watching someone push a cart with a broken right front wheel.  They try to go strait but always pull to one side.  Eventually they will go in a circle

I hope it's ok that I join in on this thread.  I will either be going high tech this summer or doing MSU in April.  A lot depends on my job situation.  Anyway, I am trying to prepare and practice now in case I do MSU in April.  I have the microscope and incubator.  The first thing I'm tyring to do is simply see the sperm under the scope and I am having real problems. 

I have the scope Tamara recommended from Toys R Us.  I put it on the middle maginification (300-450) and use either the red or blue setting.  I put the sample on the slide and then cover it with the little plastic square.  Now the eye thing that you look through can be twisted from 12 to 18X magnification.  What do I put this on? 

I put it on either the lowest or highest (not sure) and then tried to ajdust with the two knobs until I saw something.  I was able to focus, but didn't see anything.  Is there any advice anyone can offer?  What does the sperm look like?  I am so confused.  Please help!

My sample at the end of the hour always looks cloudy. That is why I think it's hard for us to tell if it mixed!  I always use the thick part of EW which for me I think helps it float better. last time I used mixed EW and it was OK but not as good as when I use thick EW. ahve one more practice tomorrow night and will post my results.

Here is what they look like. What I do is turn the lower knob slowly, from all the way down to up. I use the middle magnification first. I also adjust the light source slightly away from the slide. You will see the slide first, then you might see a little motion, and you just zoom into that. A dark room sometimes helps. I do not use the 12x 18x adjuster. I bought the TRU one and I don't have any color thingys?

I use teh sam scope.I think blue is teh best to use. Just have to play with the light and everything .This is what I do. Not so easy to find them.

Ladies I never put cover on the sample Im looking at. Do we have to? Or it's easyer to see them like that?

So would it be safe to make the following assumptions?->

1.  Slow moving sperm are X's

2. Sperm that look like shooting stars are X's

3.  Straight, fast moving are Y's

4.  Those that seem to stay on the slide (Y's will go straight off so you can no longer see them) wobbling to either the left or the right and coming back to where they started are X's.

What about the ones that seem to wobble instead of going completely straight could you assume that these are X's?

From the video that Gardangels posted (Thank you!) could it be easily understood which are the X's and which are the Y's?

Welcome!!! It is easier to see them on a whole first (12X magnification) then focus on them once you have seen them like that so you have a better idea of what you are looking for.  Good Luck!!!

I put the cover on mainly to see just one layer, it is easier to find them.  It is like it makes the drop that I put on the slide take up more space if that makes sense.  I remember reading another reason but I cannot remember what it was exactly.

shooting star sperm (super x) do look like shooting stars.  They shoot across like they have rockets instead of tails.  they shoot across the view- only about 5% are this

y sperm do swim strait.  In a good sort in the ew 99% will be swimming strait

this one is more like what we see with our cheep scopes.  In this clip i see no super x.  It is a mix of y and x.  The x sperm swim kind of like a spirial

from 18 seconds to 24 seconds you can see a very clear spiral swimming sperm
