I got rushed to hospital in incredible pain (worse than childbirth) a few days ago, and had to have emergency surgery. There was a huge cyst wrapped around my left ovary which had calcified in parts, and it had cut off the blood supply to my left ovary and fallopian tube. I had to have the whole lot removed. Thank goodness I have a spare ovary!!
The doctors think I may have had a rare reaction to the calcium supplements I was taking to sway for a girl, so no more of the supps for me. Even though I'd been drinking bucketloads of water with them, the extra calcium just doesn't work well in my body. They did give me a technical name for this, but it's in my hospital notes which are being posted to me.
The cyst and ovary + tube were too big to take out through keyhole surgery so they had to open me right up. I'm on bed rest for at least the next 10 days and I'm not allowed to drive or lift my toddler (or DTD!) for the next six weeks which will be difficult. Luckily DH's boss has been brilliant and he's going to be home to help me for most of the time.
But once my convalescence is over I need to get my head around TTC with only one ovary. Has anyone else here done that? I'm not sure what to expect and the gyno at the hospital didn't really know either - apparently some people's remaining ovary goes on strike for a while and don't produce any eggs for six months + then only produce one egg every two or three months, and other people's left over ovary does double duty and shoots out an egg every month. I hope mine is the second sort.
Anyway, I don't mean to scare others off calcium supps because I'm assured that this is very rare, but I just wanted to let you know what has happened in case there are others who've been through this or something similar.
