Is it possible to have a m/c and not need a d&c?

I just started to miscarry yesterday at 5 weeks 5 days (I just found out I was expecting last Friday). I went to the ER because I started bleeding. They did an ultrasound and tranvaginal ultrasound. The doctor said there was no indication of a pregnancy visible on either one. My beta was 47, which the doctor said was on the low side for 5 weeks and that I need to go have another beta done Friday or Monday to make sure my numbers are dropping. He said since nothing was visible on the u/s and that I didn’t need a d&c and I would just bleed like a period, maybe a little heavier, for about a week. Well I keep reading about women needing d&c’s so I wondering if it’s possible to pass everything without needing a d&c?I have been bleeding pretty heavy today, passing a few blood clots. I haven’t had any cramping or pain, it’s pretty much just like a normal period for me.  This is my first m/c after 4 healthy pregnancies and the ER doc didn’t really explain things to me, and I was in such shock I couldn’t think of anything to ask at the time. So is it really possible to just bleed like this, pass everything and its over?

I had two early miscarriages and never needed a d&c.  I think there are signs you are supposed to look for that mean you would need one, but I don't know what they are.  Maybe continued bleeding?  Sorry about your loss and I hope you are feeling okay!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Sad Flower I had a mc @ 7 weeks in July and had a natural mc with no problems, thank God. My beta was 3800 the day I started bleeding and after 6 days it was 740. It took around 3 weeks to get it to 0. I bled quite heavy for a week.

I mc at 12 1/2 weeks and did not want to do a d&c.  It took 4 months but I did have a complete mc with no problems.

Many people opt not to have a D&C, especially when it is very early in the pregnancy.  Even at 12 weeks, I was given the option to let it happen naturally.  So sorry that you had to go through this, wishing you well in your future ttc plans.....

first miscarriages are so shocking...you never think it will happen to you...especially after healthy pregnancies.  I am sorry you have to go through this.  The earlier you miscarry the easier a natural one will be.  Also, they tend to go easier if you go into an all out bleeding and progress to actually miscarrying right away verses spotting off and on for weeks or longer.

I had a D&C once for a miscarriage and it left me feeling sort of violated in a way.  I had to have it in the hospital maternity ward.  That was unpleasant and emotional.  Then they knock you out and you wake up and everything is over and gone.  I felt very robbed.  However a few months ago I had another m/c and opted to do it natural.  I had been having weeks of spotting before the miscarriage diagnosis, kept getting told everything would be ok.  Well it was a horrible experience. I had massive bleeding when it finally came on.  massive.  I was passing clots larger than softballs continously and using bathroom towels instead of pads my bleeding was so bad.  If anything like that starts happening go to ER right away.  Its scary and painful.

Wishing you a speedy recovery physically and sending hugs.  Its a painful thing and something you spend the rest of your life thinking about.

I had a m/c at 9 weeks and no d&c.  It was over in about 7-8 days and like a heavy period.  At one point I had bad cramps and the doc gave my a script for a painkiller but that's it.  I didnt want a D&C because of the risk of scar tissue and plus I found it easier emotionally not to be 'scraped out' though most people like that there is no bleeding for a while.  Sorry if I used that term but I get so squeemish about things!  I'm so sorry for your loss...take care of yourself.

I've had 2 m/c's without d&c and 2 m/c's with d&c.  You are lucky that it's happening naturally, because as other pp have mentioned, d&c's are not the nicest.  I had one m/c at 5 weeks and it was pretty much as you described, a normal period.  If it goes on for longer than normal or you start to get unusual cramping, I would call your Dr, otherwise, it should just complete by itself.  Sorry that it's happening to you[:'(]

Re: Is it possible to have a m/c and not need a d&c?

I'm so sorry this is happening to you.  I've had to miscarriages.  The first I lost at 7.5 weeks.  I bled very heavily for a few days.  My second miscarriage was diagnosed at 8 weeks but the baby had died at 6 weeks.  I opted to wait it out to happen naturally.  I really didn't want a d & c.  It took a little more than another week for it to happen.  The night everything passed was really scary.  Blood was just pouring out of me, like urination at times, along with large clots and the intact sac.  I was scared and dh called the doctor.  As long as it stopped within a couple of hours, they told us it would be fine.  I don't remember the cramping being too bad, but the bleeding was scary.  After that I bled like a period for at least a week.  With my first loss, the tiny baby actually passed out of me while I was being checked by the doctor.  I felt better somehow passing the second one at home. It is so incredibly hard to go through this.  I'll be thinking of you.  Hearts

Thank you for your replies! It's day 6 since the m/c started and the bleeding is starting to slow. I went for another beta Friday and it was negitive so I guess it's officially over Sad  I just never thought this would happen to me...thanks again everyone for sharing and so sorry to all of you for having to go through this also.
