Hi all,  I just had my 16 week ultrasound and the tech said "I don't see any boy parts, so it is a girl".  I didn't see any definite girls parts either.  I was just curious if any of you, recently in the past few years when ultrasound have been so accuate, had a tech tell you girl and it turned out to be a boy at a later ultrasound or at birth.  I have another ultrasound at 20 weeks, so I guess I will learn more then.   We have 1 boy and 2 girls and were hoping for another little boy.  A new baby girl will be well loved, but I just still wonder.

Hi Stephanie, well, since she didn't see girl parts specifically I suppose it could still be a boy depending on baby's position.  Was it an good open-leg shot?  If so, my opinion is that it's probably a girl, but you never know.  I'm only speaking from experience, when I had a scan at almost 16 weeks with my son his boy parts were obvious; with this one at 16 weeks her girl parts were tiny but you could see them with the right view.

Let us know what you hear at 20 weeks!

Thanks to all who read my post.  I am coming to terms with a 3rd daughter, as it will be easy to bunk the 2 little ones together and I have girl clothes for life, but I was wondering if anyone had an ultrasound at 16/17 weeks and told girl, but then it changed to boy at their 20 week??  There has to be a few of you out there.

I haven't had it happen to me, but I have heard of it happening! was it a good open legs shot? if not, then he very well could have been hiding his parts!

It hasn't happened to me (not yet at least ) and it's never happened to anyone I know in real life.  But, I've heard several stories about it online.  I'm not an u/s tech, but from the techs I've learned from online it's been said that a tech should say girl or boy based on the parts they see, not the parts they don't see. To say girl, they should be saying it because they SEE labia.  To say boy, they should be saying it because they SEE both penis and scrotum.  Otherwise, I believe it may not be as accurate. 

For what it's worth, when I was pregnant with my first child, my doctor did the 19 week sono and said the exact same thing your tech said.  As it turned out, it was indeed a girl.  I never even questioned it at the time because I didn't know anything about u/s during my first pregnancy.  If I knew then what I knew now, I would have been skeptical.  But, he was right!

Thanks everyone.  I loved reading the post on the BBC boards.  It gives me a little hope for a boy, but I am falling in love with this little girl now too inside of me.

Oh my, I am in the EXACT same boat as you. We have 2 dd and this is our last baby. (for medical reasons) I will be 17 weeks on Sunday and at my 15 w 4 d ultrasound the tech (who has only been a tech for 5 years) said she  thinks it may be a girl because she sees no boy parts but the baby was moving so very much and its legs were all over the place. She said at one angle she "thought" she saw something that was a boy part but she isn't sure and I should wait for my level 2 on 9/19/08. Uggghhh, 3 weeks away. She couldn't even get a decent shot for me to post here. (she wasn't very friendly, love my old tech better but had to switch docs) So here I sit with odds of 60% girl and 40% boy (given by the tech who said kinda snarkly "well if I had to guess I would say 60% girl") I am CLINGING TO THAT 40% WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL (espically after we lost a son last August due to emergency surgery for an ovarian/fallopian tube torsion)

So...I can totally sympathise!!!

 I know someone who was told girl based on not seeing any boy parts.  Those parts were hiding, and it was a boy . . . I think you still have a chance unless they saw the girl parts--sounds like the tech did not from your post.

I saw that post and to be honest her 20 week scan doesn't look very girly to me and I can't really understand why the tech said girl. There are no 3 lines (girl parts) and the shadow in the crotch area looks suspiciously like a penis and scrotum to me.

stephanie...i am in that same boat right now..i had 3 ultrasounds...one at 17 week, 20 weeks then 28 weeks...the one at 28 weeks was a 3d/4d.  with my first ultrasound the tech said too early to tell--saw lines but not distinct..with second ultrasound the tech said he was 'pretty sure' it was a girl..he was very vague though and the ultrasound was done at the hospital--so to me it didnt sound like he wanted to  look for the gender..with the 3rd ultrasound..the tech said girl, boy, girl, then finally boy...i think i am going with boy since the ultrasound was done at 28 weeks.

I thought the same thing! I anxiously went to read that *sigh*, I am my own worst enemy right now. But when I saw the pic, it looked EXACTLY like my middle son's ultrasound! I'm really surprised they told her girl based on that.

Thanks so much for all your responses.  I have been super busy with the first day of school activities and sports for my 2 oldest kids, that I have not been on here in a quite a few days.  I loved reading everyones posts and I have my big 20 week ultrasound this Wednesday 9/17, so hopefully I will find out 100%, just so I know to go thru all my girl clothes and get ready.  I am excited either way!!
