    Embracing all that is Boy...

    Alright.

I'm working through feeling sorry for myself and want to focus on how I can raise wonderful men.  Men who will ADORE and CHERISH their mommy (ahem, that being me) and willingly visit her weekly someday in her "Assisted Living Community" when she is old and frail.

Can anyone recommend any good books/websites?  I'm an information junkie and would love to just kind of throw myself into some research on what I should be doing to foster raising a happy and emotionally intelligent boy.  Because we all know plenty of retarded men in that department...

Well I dont know about the adult sons, cause mine are still under age,

but I do know that when I show interest in what my sons DO they love me for it!

But I am dreading that I may have to learn how to play golf - I hate that sport but

dont let my oldest know about it...

He said that he would like to play golf with me anytime and so far I have

been playing mini-golf with him and that has been very fun for us both!

Oh yes!  You sound like me!  Right now I'm reading "Raising Cain" by Dan Kindlon and Michael Thompson.  "Why Gender Matters" by Leonard Sax (this one is great for helping me understand why boys act the way they do).  The last one I'm reading is "Real Boys" by William Pollack.  These three books are giving me a good balance of perspectives on boys.  I always feel better about mothering boys after getting a few chapters in.  Like I'm making every effort to do it right, even though much of the time I feel like a fish out of water with them.

"Bringing Up Boys" by James Dobson is a pretty good book.  Also, in understanding men (which will help us to raise good ones)... Wild at Heart by John Eldridge (I think that's the author)  is a great one.

I am on board with you on raising great men.  I have tried to focus on the fact that I have been entrusted to raise some really good guys.  Our daughters-in-law will thank us for it!  Happy

I love, love, love raising cain, I highly recommend it for inf on raising "emotionally open, sensitive, caring and yet strong men" something along those lines, i really enjoyed reading it, although my ds was still very young, and I know I will refer to it in the future, there is also a book I have ( got to dig it up) by a doctor dobson on raising boys, it is a christian perspective, i also find this book worth a read, ...

I also love Raising Cain. Great book. I'm not a big fan of Dobson as he's quite punitive in his disipline and I try to be more focused on the positive. (That's the goal anyhow! Happy Wink)

There's a book that I really want to read...It's called the secret love of sons by J. weinstock. It's not really a "how to" book, but is a book about how men feel about their mothers at different stages of life. Part of me is scared to read, though...distancing is inevitable, and I can't bear that thought right now. But, I'm very interested...
