I have three boys and none of my kids ever spit up very much. I know that some babies do spit up more than others. I have a 5 month old neice who spits up constantly and I mean it is alot of spit up every single time. They even joke about how she does it so much that you have to use a towel(they use receiving blankets) but I always grab one of my old towels when I watch her. Regular burp cloths do not do it. You have to expect to get baby spit up on you whenever you hold her. She is breastfed and my sil always says"I'd hate to see what she would do on formula" and I know that she assumes that since she is eating breastmilk that the baby is ok. I feel so bad for my little neice(they just wipe her up so she often smells like spit up. When I have her I give her a bath when she does it real bad. They tell me "you cant do that every time or you will never get a break" I just don't want her to sit in spit up all the time I think of how I would feel and I know she can't express it and it can't be comfortable. I have tried to talk to my brother and he gets defensive and says that the dr tells them she is fine.(he is very scared of his wife). They go to a different dr than I take my kids to,and when ds3 was two weeks he was spitting up alot with no fever and she still had him checked out at a bigger hospital. He was fine, but his vomiting subsided the following week. I know she is not my child and I should butt out, however, I am concerned about it. What do you guys think? Should I talk to my brother again or wait it out. This is so hard to keep my mouth shut. Sil will say I am just jealous. Do you guys think it is nothing to worry about? My couch has so much of her vomit cleaned off of it it isn't funny. My sil just says "oh breastmilk doesn't stain."
There are alot of meds for that Zantac or Axid. I don't see why they don't request to be put on one of those. The only bad thing would be if it doesn't work. Most babies grow out of this, but if it were my baby I would try the medicine because you know it's got to be miserable to have stomach acid coming up so much.
If the baby is gaining weight, then the peds don't worry about how spitty they are.
Do you think the baby is gaining weight?
Yes she is gaining weight, but I just feel so bad for her. If she were my child I would have had her looked at by a gastro person already.
My DS1 was just like that. I bf'd and he spit up all the time. He continued to gain weight and ate great. There is something that can keep them from gaining weight, but I can't think of the name. My MIL tells me all the time that my BIL had it. He had to have a surgery to fix something. There is a difference between spitting up and forceful vomitting. I think as long as it's spit up and she gains weight and had pee and poo diapers like she shoud, it's fine.
I have had 2 children like this. My last one was worse, but still. I know it is horrible to think that she is spitting all this milk up. Believe me..........my house is a laundromat. My daugther goes through about 5 outfits a day and I have to change about 3 times a day. The most important thing here is if she's comfortable. If she doesn't cry when she does it, then it's fine. She clearly has reflux but there are two types. The painful excruciating one, where they cry and scream all the time and the type that doesn't bother them at all. Your niece sounds like she just creates a laundry problem but she isn't in pain. I would say that she is just fine. She would only need to be put on medication if she's in pain. She will grow out of it within a year. Usually between 7 to 12 months. Hope this helps and you can stop worrying. I think giving her a bath is nice..........because I'm sure she doesn't like to sit in wet stinky milk, just like you said.
Thanks everyone for answering my question. I will not say anymore to my brother. But I will still give her the baths when I have her if I think she spit up a little too much. One time my brother came back and I was getting ready to change her outfit because she had spit up so much and he told me not to bother because she will just do it again. While this is true I did let him know that I thought that was gross. I mean if you get a kid that spits up and you have to change her alot then so be it. That is what washing machines are for in my opinion. Guess I will just have to agree to disagree I guess. I will change her clothes whenever I have her even if I have to put her in one of my "boy" outfits while I wash what she had on.
My kids were all huge spitters...right from birth until they started on baby food...I went thru a lot of bibs everyday...that cut down on the changing clothes and bathtime!!!

Madame Zaritska's prediction: The day you deliver, outside will be blustery. Your baby will arrive in the evening. After a labor lasting approximately 6 hours, your child, a girl, will be born. Your baby will weigh about 6 pounds, 2 ounces, and will be 18 inches long. This child will have light brown eyes and dark hair.
