I was talking to dh last night about our quest for our daughter.  His chief concern remains the financial ramifications.

Has anyone here inquired about the possibility of cost-sharing a cycle with a couple that seeks to adopt embryos?

I have wished to remain magnanamous and donate unused embryos outright, though cost is prohibitive.

I am not sure how one would arrange such an agreement.

Any thoughts?

Remembering my tiniest baby. My daughter from petri dish #3, conceived 10.27.07, transferred 10.31.07, loved for always.

Wife to Jim, Mommy to David 12, Harry 7, George 5, Thomas 2, Michael our newborn, and Frank, forever my baby.

My precious Frank Charles, born and died 8.4.08 at 22 weeks, 2 days due
to placental abruption and PROM, and responsible for the most treasured
thirty minutes of my life.

I know this practice does happen in the UK among infertile couples, because I have seen concerns raised that couples who aren't really comfortable with donating embryos might get pushed into it because it's the only way they can afford IVF.  I don't know if this occurs in the US.

Did you consider egg donation?  Unless you are too old, this would be a better option than embryo sharing.  You could do a couple of cycles of egg donation, and that way you would have the money saved up front -- and also you would have gained a lot of valuable information about how you respond to ovarian hyperstimulation.    With embryo sharing there is a big risk that you won't have any embryos to share (not to mention any for yourself).

That is a good point Maureen.  I did a quick Google search and found that locally, donors are compensated approx $4k for one successful egg retrieval.

I believe that I would be more at peace donating eggs than embryos.  I wonder how many donation cycles are possible.

You bring up a very interesting and unique approach to make this hi-tech option potentially affordable.    Is this becoming more common?  TJ

At this time I don't know of anyone who has donated eggs for this purpose.

I donated eggs once right after college (about 10 years ago) and I was compensated $5000 plus travel expenses back then.  It was actually $1250 for completing the meds and $3750 for the retrival.  Look around at different agencies as our local one only paid $1800 total for an egg donation.  The one that I used was based out of California but had couples all over the country.  I just happened to be selected by a couple on the East Coast.  The key to success would be to donate to a couple close to your home as I donated to a couple in NYC and I live in the mid-west.  Although they paid for my airfare and hotel I was in NYC for 10 days and ending up spending alot of money in the process.  As Maureen said, it did give me alot of insight into what I can expect during an IVF cycle.

I checked into egg donation several years ago.  I found a place that was eager to give me $5000 per egg because I have a PhD.  Since I am older than 32 now, noone will give me anything!   If anyone is considering it, shop around and if you have an advanced degree, you will get lots more $$.

I checked into egg donation at the Cooper Center, and I wanted to make sure that I was anonymous to both the parents and the children, and the lady said that currently it is anonymous but there is no law right now about it.  She said in the future there may be a law that allows the children to find out information about the donors.  This scares me a little because I don't want a child coming to me years from now telling me that I am his/her mother.  Just thought you might want to know.
