I went to see my health visitor the other day just for a general check and she has asked me to come back to discuss my sons development. He is just short of 8 months and cant roll, sit, stand whilst being help or anything. She said if he wasnt siting by our next appointment (week on monday) she would refer him to a pedeotrician...

.Being a mum i instantly went surfing the net (biggest mistake) and found the worste things possible. Now all i have done is panic myself. Has anyone else has the same thing and was your baby just a slow developer or was there something wrong? We have autism in our family (my brother) and im just prayinghe is just a slow developer.

I actually refused this with my daughter as this assesment is supposed to be done around 12months, but for some reason they have changed it to between 7/8months... my daughter wasnt sitting unaided at 7months and there is NO way i would expect a baby to be standing up at that age!! All babies develop at different stages and health visitors(who absolutely do my head in!!) do more harm than good!! My youngest daughter is 12months old and I have 9 of the delightful creatures. My youngest walker was 9months old, yet my little girl isnt walking at 12months, doesnt mean that she is behind or slow, it means that she is developing at her own pace. They are all different. Trust me as a mum of 9, I have forgotten more than they have ever learned, lol... Let yr little man go at his own pace, and for what its worth, my 13 yr old son has ADHD, ODD and autistic traits and was walking at 11months... yr son will do it when he's good and ready... xx

Yes this is what i wanted to hear. I thought the same he is just a bit slower than others. He is a very big boy  1 stone 6lb at 8 months so i thought he just struggled because he was holding a lot of weight. She did call the other day to see how things were and suggested an MRI scan to check his muscles which has paniced me even more. He seems really alert to me so i may just ask her to leave it for now. I feel like im in a position where if i dont see someone and something is wrong it will then be my fault. Im pretty sure he is fine and its all extra worry that is unneccessary.

Wow 9 you must be an amazingly patient woman! X

A mothers instinct is the strongest intuition you will ever come across, and if there was something wrong, u would be the 1st to know! (I knew my son was 'different' from 6months old and pushed to get him the help he needs, he was finally diagnosed when he was 11, he is now in a special needs school and it is the 1st time during his school life where he hasnt been made to feel like an outsider, for the 1st time in 13years he has friends and can manage a whole day at school without panicking and getting sent home, I wished they had listened to me in the 1st place!!) what I am trying to say is, if you are happy with his development then dont feel bullied into anything, BUT if you are worried, theres no harm in checking...

Patience?? whats that :o)... haha.. believe it or not large families are actually easy, my kids have always got a platmate (and someone to argue with!), and I have live in babysitters :D.. lol...

Real shame about your DS, my brother had the same, the schools always sent him home for bad behavior when he needed help. No-one wanted to know and back then autism wasnt so recognised so they put it down to bad behavior. He is 24 now and rents a room from my Big sis but he doesnt work or anything. I feel for him as no-one still wants to help so he gets dumped left right and centre. He is hard work and flips sometimes for no reason but he is great and has a heart of gold. We have an appointment next monday so will see what they say. Hopefully they say he is big and will cathc up in his own time.

You are a braver lady than me. Although i do find 2 easier than 1 on their own. But i think i will leave it there. Happy Wink

So my oldest son was crawling at 4.5 months!! And was pulling himself up to stand around the same time.. i was so unprepared.. when my DS2 didn't start crawling until 8 months I started to get worried... but when I talked to our DR. about it she said how way early my older son had done that and not to worry. I then was talking to my sister and realized that 3 of her 4 kids were a lot like your son.. not sitting, not crawling, not rolling at 8 months.. And they are all fine now. I think it took them up until 12 months in fact to do most of those things. They too were pretty big babies.. and my DS2 was bigger then our first. I don't know if the extra weight makes it harder, or just each individual does things at their own pace, you know? Also, some say that if other things are going on.. teething etc. or other developmental things then the physical ones take a back seat. And I heard that children with older siblings are less motivated since often their sibling is bringing them things and entertaining them. Try not to stress too much.. I would go for the assessment just because I would want to make sure.. but definitely don't read things online! You can drive yourself crazy reading all the things online.. you know? My husband's uncle is autistic and when our DS1 didn't smile for months and months I drove myself crazy assuming the worst.. he is completely developmentally fine at 4 yrs old now.. hang in there! Hope all goes well at your next appointment.

Thank you hope1212, Im a complete nightmare for internet googling, also i get emails telling me what my baby should be doing this week and then think well he cant do anything like that yet! Maybe i need to start unsubscribing to things!! He is quite unresponsive to me calling him but i think he is just ignorant as if there is food and im calling him he is turning around straight away! You are right my daughter does mother him and gets him everything, i sometimes wonder who's the mum between me and her. Thanks alot for your input ladies im feeling a bit more relaxed about tuesday. Will update!

Thanks for your help before, we went to see the health visitor and she has refered him for a hearing check and he starts physio to try and strengthen his muscles. She said they are doing tests now for autism but nothing can be decided until the age of 2 so it wouldnt be worht our while. Hopefully the physio will give us some great exercises and he will be off in no time!

 Hi Ruby red,

Things still arent great but they may have identified the problem....FINALLY!!

Joel has had 3 ear infections in the last 6 weeks so they suspect he has glue ear. They are checking him over at the hospital and i think they are going to fit grommets. He is currently having speech therapy to see if they can bring him on a bit. If he does have glue ear it will explain why he doesnt hear me very well or respond to me.

Yes i do know glue ear will cause decreased hearing. Im happy they have at least found a possible problem. My friends son is just not meeting any milestones and he is 10 months old. I think her pediatrician is finally listening. Thanks for the update.

When my 13 year old was a baby, he was late doing everything!   Sitting up, crawling, walking, the Dr had therapists come out to our home to help. had me in a panic. fast forward to now......he is a super smart kid, and is not behind in anything. I think it was just Nate doing things in Nate time.

Hoping your next appt goes well.

Nate took his first steps the day he turned 16 months. never thought that kid would walk Happy

 Thank you Debi,

We have an appointment tomorrow for him with the ENT specialist. We really think its all linked to his ears. Fingers crossed for tomorrow, hope we get the answers me need to bring him on a bit.

Good luck tomorrow. I know my son was behind of everything. he was a bigger boy, and no you wouldn't know the difference. I love that we have technology (like ultrasounds) and regular check up with kids, but geesh. It could literally scare the day lights out of any mom. Keep us posted, I would love to hear how you little man is doing.
