Sorry, I can't post this in the right place.. hoping that someone who has experience with this can help? I just got a call from my OB.. I am still waiting to see if I have complete placenta previa.. I'll be 28 weeks and getting an ultrasound on Monday.. but now they are informing me that my blood platelet count is really low.. I'm kind of freaking out here.. I mean, that means I run the risk of blood clotting, right? And if my placenta hasn't moved I'm automatically required to have a c-section.. isn't that super dangerous if my blood could start clotting? I"m kind of freaking out, and my dr's office is by far the worst when it comes to communicating risks or conditions etc. I'm trying not to think too much about the placenta thing, but this has really thrown me now. I had vaginal deliveries with my first 2 sons. My first was super risky, they actually replaced the fluid through an iv bag so I could deliver him and not have a c-section.. we were just really lucky the dr. worked with us and didn't push the c section, but it was super risky.. with my second it was easy breezy.. I just never imagined having all these complications suddenly.. all of this is so what I didn't imagine.. Has anyone had this, and did everything turn out okay? The nurse said a dr. will call me but not until tomorrow.. I'm not finding much helpful information online and I don't want to freak myself out any more.. thanks!!

Platelets are what help your blood to clot.  If your platelets are low you are not at risk for developing a blood clot, but rather, not clotting at all and bleeding too much.  Some women get gestational thrombocytopenia- which just means low platelets in pregnancy.  It needs to be watched but depending on what your lab value is may not change any of your care needs.

thanks.. i just read up on it.. the nurse who talked to me said the opposite.. unfortunately, seems worse if i have placenta previa since that can cause bleeding. Yikes! It's 105 right now.. she said norm is 140-400.. so seems like it's low.. but not insanely low, right? The dr. is supposed to call me tomorrow to talk about retesting etc. Just really hoping my placenta has moved.. I'm feeling a lot of pressure if these two things will be going on at once.

Coming from a nursing background, i would have them recheck your blood closer to delivery, odds are you probably wont be able to deliver naturally due to the location of the placenta....it is recommended that the hospital prepare ahead of time to have plenty of your blood on hand incase of an emergency....when my blood was last checked at 28 weeks it was fine, however, on delivery day I ended up hemorraging as my littlest girl was 5 weeks early! With a low blood count your safest route is by c-section so it is a more controlled environment....they are better able to control bleeding and more then likely will deliver you a week or 2 early to hopefully avoid going into labor.
