I had my ultrasound yesterday and found out that we are having our long awaited little boy :)! After the ultrasound the tech scheduled me for 4 more ultrasounds to watch his growth. This concerned me because I have never had this happen before. I asked why do I need so many ultrasounds. She told me because a test result from my screening showed that I have "lower protein levels for your placenta". I dont know what that means. I called my midwife and she tried to explain what the tech was talking about. She told me one of the results from my screening showed lower protein levels which put me at risk for preterm labor and the baby having issues growing and other things. I don't know what other things she was talking about. She mentioned that my placenta looks great and our son is "growth wise" right where he should be for my dates. She also said that they didn't see any defects yet. YET. Okayyy.. She mentioned that the ultrasound can't show everything but that so far things look okay. Well, I'm worried. I asked if there were supplements I should take and if so what they are. She said no that there isn't really anything I can do about this, that it isn't that type of protein.

What I am getting at is that I am still very worried. I still don't quite understand what everyone is talking about. I don't know what "other things" the ultrasound wouldn't show. And, has anyone else been told this stuff? What am I to expect. Should I be worried??? I already am worried... but do I need to be worried... ugh I can't stop thinking about this.

Hi

I'm sorry you didnt here all good  news at your scan. But so happy for you that you are expecting your boy.

After my 20 week scan they told me my baby was IUGR(intrauterine growth restricted) could be for several reasons. So I looked on the internet where mums were discussing it and some of them had had low levels (cant remember what they were called)at there 12 week scan. I didnt really look into it more than that but I'm sure there is probably more info out there. I hope you get some answers and your scans go well.

I am going to have 2 weekly growth scans, also had an amnio to rule out chromosomal abnormality but they thought this was unlikely as the baby looked normal but just small.  On the forum those people who had had low levels at 12 weeks and IUGR were taking hi protein shakes and low dose asprin, but im sure this had been recommended to them.  That has not been mentioned to me.

It seems promising that your baby is growing well and they are going to keep a close eye on him.  Like yourself I have not had any such problems before.  Infact I have had such easy pregnancies and births before I Have only seen the midwife never doctors.  I hope this helps, I'm sorry I cannot tell you more.

Well, I will be praying that your growth scans come out great same with the amnio. This is so new to me I'm not sure what I should be or shouldn't be doing. No one told me that my baby had IUGR. So, I don't quite know what to do in this situation if there is anything that I can do anyway. Except pray. I'll update the next time I have an ultrasound but that wont be until October. I have ultrasounds scheduled for October, November, December, and January. .. I hope everything is okay with both our children and we can post positive updates.

I found out a little more about what my midwife was talking about. She told me that I had a low papp-a level. She said that my baby looks completley healthy and normal. But, that I am at a slightly increased risk of developing preeclampsia and the baby has a increase risk in having problems with his growth. I asked if there were any chromosomal issues and she said that nothing like that has been found and that I do not need to worry about that. The place my midwives send their patients for ultrasounds specializes in high risk pregnancies so they are very thorough in their ultrasounds. I guess they didn't find anything wrong thus far. My baby is right on target for all of his measurements and his bones, facial bones, heart, stomach, and the like are normal. She couldn't give me the exact level my papp-a was at because her computer wasn't letting her view the numbers. She said that I was at 1% though. Not sure what that means. I have an apt scheduled for Thursday so I will ask for exact numbers on the tests... Prayin my little one stays healthy and myself as well.

Thats good you managed to find out a bit more I hope it has put your mind at ease. I once read about papp a levels cause someone was trying predict gender with the papp a level. This appeared to be lower for boys than girls they also were looking at hcg which was also lower for boys!! I hope your appointment goes well on thurs I also have one to.

Thank you and I'm still a little worried but not overly so that I start to panic like I was. Let me know how your apt. goes. Will be thinkin' of you!! And that is interesing I didn't know that could be an indicator of gender lol

I just wanted to do a quick update. I had a growth scan today to take messurements of our little man. He is PERFECT! Right on schedule!!!!!! And oh so freaking cute! He was sucking on his fingers and sticking out his tounge haha!! He even scowled when the ultrasound tech pushed on him to make him move his hands lol. I am so over the moon right now :)!!! I still have 3 more growth scans scheduled. My next on is November 1st and I will update after. Praying he stays on track! Also, I am doing well. I have not shown signs of pre-eclampsia or preterm labor like they say I may. I did have a hemorrhage but it was small and it healed. :)
