Hi everyone,

I am new to this site!  I had an egg retrieval on Tuesday and was disheartened to see that I got 10 eggs, but of those only 5 fertilized (tey said there were only 7 mature eggs). They aer now in PGD process and I was due to hear back today or tomorrow.

I have done one other round and last time got 6 eggs only, of which 5 fertilized and there was 1 very viable male and 2 other fairly viable males. (I am trying for a girl. I have 2 lovely sons, ages 7 and 5). I did that cycle about 2 years ago.

Anyway, I am feeling dismayed as it seems to me that it will be very difficult to get a healthy girl embryo out of 5 fertilized eggs (won't almost 1/2 of them be lost in the PGD process or no?).

I guess I am just looking for support- does anyone think it possible that with 5 embies 3 or so could survive PGD (how many embies does PGD destory typically?) and that 1 of these could actually be female? I guess because we already have 2 sons and last time I had 3 viables out of 5 and all were male (oh, and the other 2 nonviables were also male! i believe one that died v early on was female accdg to dr). Anyway, bc of all that I am feeling sort of worried that a girl embryo is a very longshot. I will consider it the most remarkable and happy miracle if we do get a girl embryo.

I v much wish we could have done MS, but I am here in NYC and while the IVF clinic seems fantastic they do not, obviously, have MS. So, I am just hoping that some of my husband's sperm will be female and a female embryo will be created. For those of you who did PGD with MS, how did you do that? Did you do it at an MS facility? OR can you send teh sperm for an MS spin and have it sent back to the IVF clinic you are using? Sorry to be such an imbecile! You can very much tell I am a newbie!

I am sorry to come on here and just vent- epecially considering this is the first time we've "met"! It is beyond rude of me. I do hope to be a better in-gender participant in the future (and as I get used to the site), but I am clearly just a nervous wreck right now as I await these results.

Anyway, if any of you enormously kind and supportive souls can even make sense of this rambling message, I'd be so v grateful for any guidance or help you could give me. Specifically whether youve ever heard of someone with just 5 embies going through the PGD process and somehow getting a girl embryo out of that! Am looking for stories of success! :-) (hard to be positive given my last round with 5 embryos resulted in nearly all males). Are there people, based on your guys' knowledge of this board, who just produce only 1 gender of embryo??

Okay, thank you so very much, ladies. I am beyond thankful to any help you can give me. Sorry to enter the forum for the first time in such an emotionally fragile manner!

Thanks!

Mom to 2 wonderful boys, 7 and 5.

It can definitely work with low numbers.  It will just come down to quality.  Hopefully, since you had lower numbers, quality will be good and you can still end up with a couple of females for transfer.  You should not lose viable embryos due to the biopsy.  A good embryo should make it...it will just depend on how many probes you do as to how many are abnormal.  If 50% are girls and you get the 3/2 split your way, you could end up with one or two to transfer.  You just need one good one!  Good luck!

Believe in dreams, they do come true.

You are so wonderful to write me back and to encourage me! I cannot thank you enough. Honestly, it's so kind of you to go out of your way and send me this positive note. I'm v appreciative.

I will now just wait with bated breath for the call tomorrow. Because  i had 1 cycle already that yielded all males, you dont think that influences this cycle? as in are certain couples only able to produce a certain gender embryo? Arethere women on this board who have had only 5 embies and then gotten just 1 of their desired gender and had it work? All I need is 1 success story so that I will be able to sleep tonight. :-)

And you are v right- ALL i am hoping for is 1 viable female. thats it.

Might I ask another ? though: I see a lot of women are doing PGD with MS on the board. Does that mean they are doing their cycle at the MS facility? Or is there a way to ask an IVF facility to incorporate MS? Thanks so much!

Being successfulwiggy just 5 embryos off to PGD - I am sure this has happened more than once. Momof3girls comes to mind, you can read her story here: http://www.in-gender.com/csxtra/postsbyuser.aspx?Username=mumof3girls No, certain couples do not produce more of one gender, we usually see a roughly 50/50 gender split on here, even if the couple already has several children of one gender. What happened to you is rare, but does happen unfortunately. But it does not mean that your second cycle will produce all boys. MS is currently closed to new patients for gender balancing as it is being reviewed by FDA and it is not known when and if it reopens. Most women doing gender selection now do just PGD, without MS (unless they enrolled in the MS trial prior to closure a year ago). But you can certainly do GS without PGD - many women have been successful. (Sorry for one big paragraph, safari cannot make paragraphs on this site.)

Your chances are still good - it only takes 1.

As the pp stated, MS is now closed in the US to new cyclers.  I got in at the very last minute and cycled last summer.  It was only offerred at 2 clinics - HRC in California and GIVF in Virginia.  There are a couple of places Internationally that can still offer MS.  Some places in Mexico and I think some place overseas.  Hopefully MS will one day again be available in the US.  I really hope so.  But also hopefully you'll be successful this time and won't have to worry about it.

Yes, definitely can happy, I only had 4 sent to PGD in my 2nd cycle which resulted in 3 girls and only 1 boy (I wanted a boy) - he is now my precious 4 month old son!!!  My 1st cycled resulted in 7 PGD - 5 girls and only 2 boys (1 male transferred BFN, the other didn't survive the thaw).

I felt very deflated with only having 4 sent to PGD, and when I got the news of 1 healthy boy I was soooo excited, but also scared that there was only 1 to rely on, but it all turned out, so think positive and DON'T stress, I truely belive anxiety may have played a part in my first embryo not taking.  Goodluck!
