having seen some people drive nails into their feet, and other puncture wounds when I did xray, there are times that the skin is minimally affected, and there is very little blood. It all depends on where the wound is--in a large muscle or fatty area, you can get really lucky!
It's only after removal that the area tends to react, or later down the road as the body sends extra blood cells, both red and white to the area to help heal it. Why bruises show up later. Why after a sprain, the area may swell up and feel hot a couple hours later.
