the baby names forum doesnt get a whole lot of hits, so i thought i would put this here Happy LOL

i am wondering what everyone's opinion is on 'i' names versus 'y' or 'ey' names. if a name is spelled with an 'i' does it make it seem dumber or idk, for lack of a better word, sluttier?

let me give you an example so you know what i am asking. take the name keli. does that indicate dumber person then kelly or kelley would? or cindi. is that dumber than cindy? ami vs amy? dani vs danny?

i think personally the i to me makes a name not appear as smart. but on the other hand i kind of think that is silly... especially since i know some very smart women with an i ending. and i am kind of considering a name spelling with an i ending.

just wondering what everyone thought about this

does ending a name with an 'i' make the name seem dumber?

  • no, i have never thought that about i names (28.1%)
  • yes, i have felt that way before about i names (40.6%)
  • maybe, kind of depends on the name (31.3%)

I had read, somewhere, that any girl name ending in any long 'e' sound is thought of as less intelligent.  Bummer since I happened to name my only dd a long 'e' name (she's brilliant btw. lol).  Personally, I don't think of 'i' over 'ey' or 'y' as less smart.  Though, when I suggested to dh "Sydnee' instead of "Sydney"...he felt that 'ee' is an ending for a stripper name. Surprise

Yep, there's quite a bit of research that suggests people with the long e ending names are passed over more often for promotions and generally thought of as less intelligent/professional. Same with the more "out there" names. And I can't find it now, but I know I've read somewhere that seeing an ie instead of a y on a name promotes negative association in potential employers. Like Darcie vs Darcy,  Ashlie vs Ashley. When I was pg with ds2 and couldn't think of a name, my doctor said to picture it on a corporate letterhead and on a stripper advertisement and decide which one was more appropriate. lol. I think he was trying to tell me that he didn't like the name I had originally chosen. Happy ROFL

I think a lot of extra letters do that but not really i/y. So Peighton or Leigha would to me look less intellegent.  And i/y only works on girls since it makes them "cute" IMO.  So no Randi/Camryn for boys Stick out tongue just girls.

I don't even remember it. I'm pretty sure it was a boy name, because I had Ashlin picked out for a girl for the longest time. I'll ask my mom tonight and see if she remembers.

I think it depends on the name. Normally, I don't like "i" ending names. I like a ie or y. Like Carly instead of Carli. And for girls, I prefer all the names that end in "a" as opposed to "y" or long "e" sound, etc.

I don't think it necessarily looks dumber or sluttier, but I would worry about everyone always spelling my kid's name wrong. I like more conventional spellings of names for that reason. I also happen to like the letter "y" in names. It's the only letter that is in all three of my kids' names!

I have never actually thought about it.  all I know is I HATE when ppl ask me if my name is spelled with an 'i'.  don't know why, but it's always bothered me when ppl spell it that way.  I've never thought I looked smarter having it spelled with a 'y' though.

In the South people with names like Babe, Bubba, Buddy and Bunny are senators, doctors, judges and CEOs. So "i" doesn't make me bat a lash. Happy Giggle

I have a y with long e sound at the end of my name and I've seen it (rarely) spelled with an i or ee and it does make me raise a brow but maybe because I'm used to seeing my name spelled my way (the right way Happy LOL). But people in general say it is a "cryo-preserved at 16 years old cheer chick" name no matter how it is spelled. Even my mom WHO NAMED ME hates it because she says it's a bimbo name. Ummm...thanks, Mom.

Yes, I've read this too.  I always try to name my babies as if they were adults.  "ie" & "i" names seem baby-ish to me, or a nickname.

Wow, I've never even heard of this lol... My name was spelt "Nicky" when I was a kid and I always hated it and thought it was too boyish, so when I was 11 I changed the spelling to "Nicki" to be more feminine. Stick out tongue I actually think an i on the end of girls' names is cute and feminine but maybe on a boy's name it would be different.
