My OB has recommended I have an IUD put in. Need opinions - did it hurt having it put in? I have no tolerance for pain, and just don't want to deal with this if it is going to hurt!

All advice appreciated.

Have to agree with everyone else.  No biggie.

Which one are you getting?  Paraguard or Mirena?  I had Paraguard and will get it again.  Definitely worth it.

No, I had mine put in about a month ago.  The nurse told me that some girls are literally trying to like "claw the ceiling" so I was freaked out and surprised that it was over so quick, very anticlimatic.

Now, about a week ago when my uterus decided to "expel" the damn thing, that's a different story.

If Paraguard is the one without any hormones at all, then that is the one I am leaning towards....although light periods from Mirena would be awesome.

"clawing the ceiling"? What does that mean??!

I believe if you ask your practitioner that it is "easier" i.e. Less uncomfortable at your post-partim visit. I had the paraguard inserted (no hormones) after my daughter was already 6 years old and they scheduled it for when my period was due so that my cervix would be slightly dilated. It was quick but I would say it was more painful than a quick"pinch" but again I wasn't freshly post-partum. I also had cramping afterwards similar to a period maybe slightly worse and my period lasted longer than a "normal" period and continued to last longer for the entire 3 years I had it before having it removed due to severe cramping during my menstrual cycle, breakthrough bleeding, and heavier, irregular periods. One benefit to the Mirena is that many women experience much lighter periods after the initial insertion. Yes, it has hormones that cause this effect, but my understanding is that these hormones ate at a much lower level than those that are absorbed ststically with oral contraceptives. Sorry to be so long-winded;) HTH Jacquelyn

This is different from person to person.  Mine were a little heavier at first but nothing major but became lighter as time went on.  My AFs were only about 3 days before I got it taken out.  I also never had breakthrough bleeding or irregular periods.  I had it for about 7 yrs.

I had the mirena and it hurt like hell going in. It could be because my cervix never dialated. I am going to get the paraguard because the mirena made me gain weight, i had chest pains (they claimed it wasnt a side effect but as soon as I got it removed they went away) doc said its from the hormone, it also had me moodier. Also my mirena got lost and I had to have it surgically removed. Thank God it was laying on my uterus. The only reason why im going this route again is I cant take any other birth control because I had blood clots in 2007

I had Mirena before and loved it.  I never got my period with it which is a HUGE benefit.  I am getting another Mirena on 11/11.

All you ladies who stopped getting their periods with the IUD are SOOOOO lucky!!!

I had the Mirena after Jonas (#3) and I STILL got my periods every month just like normal. Ugh. They didn't even get a tad bit lighter or anything.

It did hurt just a little going in. I was 8 weeks PP and maybe it hurt a little because my cervix was closing up already. No big deal though.

Honestly, I didn't like having the Mirena and wish I hadn't gotten it. But my midwife (and everyone else for that matter) was really pushing for me to get it. I had my first three kids in LESS than 3 years. She offered it to me for free so I felt like I couldn't resist. I had it for 18 months and when I had it removed, it took FOREVER to conceive again.

I don't really like how you can actually conceive a baby, but it will be prevented from implanting because of the IUD. Just my My Two Cents.
