It's new out.  Does anyone know about it?  I heard about it a few months ago and am considering it.  I hate using condoms and don't do well on the pill.  My doctor said that it can be used while you are breastfeeding because the hormone stays localized to the uterus.  He also said it can stay in for up to five years.  It is not like the old IUDs so it is reported to be safe.  I have two friends on it who are waiting for their husbands to have the big V.  I know they wont give it to you if you haven't had any children yet (going to ask why), but they say you can get pregnant again the month after it is removed.  I would just love to try something that doesn't require any thought....I can't focus on much right now.  Let me know if anyone has any feedback.  I go in for my six week checkup today and am going to ask about it.  I am also going to call my insurance and see if it's covered.

I think you meant the Mirena.  I had the Paragard IUD (non-hormone type).  I know several friends who had the Mirena or Paragard and had no problems what so ever.  I had the IUD placed last April and was only able to keep it for 4 months.  The placement was a ok, some cramping.  But my body started rejecting it and continued for 4 months until I finally said this is not worth it.  I gave it the full 3 months for my body to adjust but it just never did.  I usually have very light periods, and my periods were so heavy and painful not to mention the spotting and clotting (yuck)  I had.  Our sex life was awesome though I must say - no worries.  I wouldn't discount it based on my experience.  Most women do very well with today's IUD's.

do you mean mirena iud?

i'm getting one next month. i did not want a hormonal bc but the hormones in mirena are local and do not get in the bloodstream. they are only to prevent heavy periods which are common with the copper iud. i think it is a great option  to have  :)

I had this IUD for a few months. A couple of weeks after I had it inserted, my hips started popping. I'm not talking about a little pop, either. Every time I rolled over at night, there would be a series of loud pops, and sometimes, they were loud enough to wake up my husband. After a couple of weeks of just noise, my hip joints started to hurt. Nobody could figure out why, and when I said that it started just a couple of weeks after I got the IUD, they told me it wasn't related. I finally had the IUD taken out, and within a couple of weeks, everything went back to normal.

It may not cause you any problems. However, I did some research prior to posting this message, and it appears that I am not alone in having problems with joint pain. Other women have reported problems, too, so make sure you do your research before making a decision. (Google is a wonderful thing!) Believe me, having an IUD is a great thing for those of us who hate taking the pill or using condoms, but there are side effects that you have to look at, too.

Good luck!

Sorry for the misspelling.  Yes, I mean Mirena.  Minerva is our local indian resturaunt.  I guess I have indian on my mind. Well...I just got back from my appointment and my Dr highly recommended it, but freaked me out a little with all the "risks" he had to inform me about.  He said there is a risk of tearing your uterus and if that happens then you have to have it removed.  He also said that if you get pregnant on it they have to remove it, which increases your risk of miscarraige and that they may have to recommend terminating the pregnancy.  I know he has to say the worst, but it kind of freaked me out.  I, like Roxanne, don't do well on the pill and hate using other forms of birth control.  I don't have many options.  Anyway, have to think about it a while.  I could have had him do it today, but wanted to talk to my DH about it first.  Any thoughts?!?

I got the Mirena IUD about 3 weeks ago and so far so good!  I had been using the Ortho Evra patch prior to my last pregnancy and my doc doesn't like to prescribe that anymore (she had a 19 year old patient have a stroke on it).  She highly recommend this Mirena so I talked to my hubby about it and called my insurance company.  I love not having to worry about anything!

I had the Mirena IUD put in almost 2 years ago after the birth of my second child, Since I've had it I haven't had any problems with it, I only have a period about every 2 to 3 months and even then it's just a couple days of light spotting. When I was first considering it while I was still pg with # 2 the doctor told me that there was a risk for Pelvic Inflamatory Diease and a risk of my Uterus getting punctured and if either of those happened I would have to have my uterus removed. So far so good though, no ill side effects or anything and haven't gotten pg on it so I would recommend it, but everyone's body reacts differently.
