I live in the Chicago area and 8th grade graduation is a big deal . They have big parties and of course the guest supply a monetary gift.

Where I grew up there was no party, no gifts.

I have spoken to friends in other states and they say they do not celebrate it either.

I personally don't get it. I think it should be high school and college but not 8th grade.

My husband says I am ridiculous and that 8th grade graduation should be celebrated and that I am just jealous I didn't have one. LOL

Not true. BUt I think I am going broke with all the checks I am writing out this summer for people's kids I barely know.

Where do you live and do you celebrate it?

We don't celebrate it in our school system but there are schools in neighboring cities that do.  I personally think it's kinda silly, but I'm sure the kids think it's fun Happy Wink

We don't usually celebrate it here...usually its a gift from the parents to the graduate..and maybe a pool party or something with all their friends...but as far as gifts from others, no..unless its maybe a grandparent, but thats it...we don;t even do that for high school graduations...maybe college, but usually jwsut a party with family and friends is enough..if htey feel like bringing a gift thats up to them, but not expected!

I totally think going that far for an 8th grade graduation is a bit much!!!

Yeah, but it is more of a pared down graduation.  Nothing huge.

I had an 8th grade celebration and dance (all in same evening) but I also had pre-school, kindergarten, and 5th grade graduation where I used to live. I'm not sure how they do it out here (living in a new parish). Maybe it depends on the schools.

In Alaska, the school would have a small graduation ceremony at the school....but i had NEVER heard of graduation parties...even for graduating high school until i moved to the East Coast=o I did send out graduation cars with photos when i graduated, but never received a thing back and neither did my friends or brother. I was shocked when on our honeymoon (stayed with the in laws) my SIL graduated and they held a MASSIVE party for her and then we attended 4 of her friends graduation parties. I guess it's great to celebrate an 8th grader...but IMO i think when my DD is there in 2 years...we'll just be taking her out to dinner as a family and letting her know how proud we are of her (as we always are:)

ditto this.  I don't know about where we live now.  I'm thinking no because a lot of our schools don't start HS til 10th grade here, it was 9th where I grew up.

Where I grew up (rural MT) we actually went through graduation ceremony with the seniors.  But that was the extent of the festivities...no parties, although I do remember getting a few gifts.  And we didn't don a cap and gown like the high school graduates.

My kids go to private Catholic school which goes from 1st to 8th grade....so yes there is a graduation party to celebrate before they go off to high school. The public school kids in my area do not celebrate 8th grade. Only 12th.

I thought my school was the only weird school with 8th grade graduation(and 5th grade as well). It was a big thing, we decorated the day before and the day of, didn't have any regular classes. It was a big party in the gym and a dance that followed. It was a public school, not large, usually less than 100 per grade, sometimes a little more. The city is Little Chute, WI zip code 54140. It is however, a great school district, with high rankings. It's a suburb I guess of Appleton, WI. Appleton has a population of 70,000 while Little Chute has a little over 10,000.
