I know it's normal for a bf baby to go a week without poo, but is this normal?

My DD is 5 weeks old and seems to ALWAYS take a week to do a poo.  The last few days (while waiting for the dreaded poo) she has been quite unsettled and then finally this morning, out it came.  She is doing those explosive poos, with much grunting and crying.  They are what I would call "normal" bf baby poos, not hard at all.  Now that the floodgate has been opened, she will probably do lots of poo for a few days and then stop until another week passes.  Is that normal??

Totally normal. Breastmilk is so readily absorbed, that there is little waste compared to formula. The only question I would ask is if you've been eating anything that might be upsetting her tummy, or hurting her bottom when she poops? I know when I ate some food with hot sauce, my little guy was very unhappy when he pooped, and the area around his little bumhole was quite red and irritated.

bumhole
ahhh such a beautiful word, lol!  No her bumhole isn't red, she seems to cry more about the actual pushing out of the poo.  She grunts and carries on as though she is pushing out hard pellets and she is pretty gassy too.  Maybe it is something that I've eaten, I'm not eating spicy stuff, but also not avoiding anything either??

I'm right there with you.  It just started a few days ago.  I know it's not unusual for her to go so long, but she's so miserable in between.  I can't think of anything in particular that would keep her from going.
