What is Exclusively Breastfeeding
|
|
I'm just wondering because I read it can help as a form of birthcontrol and DH and I have DTD a few times and i'm not on birthcontrol yet. I breastfeed a few times throughout the day, but i mostly pump the milk into bottles, so am i exclusively breastfeeding?

if you are feeding or pumping as often as a baby would be drinking from you exclusively .. so no other meals come from anywhere else so you are feeding and pumping often. this is exclusively.. but honestly.. I dunno about birth control .. I have seen many ladies get pg soon after giving birth and while exclusively bf..

Yes, I'd call that exclusive breastfeeding. It just means feeding your baby nothing but breastmilk- doesn't matter if it's from the breast or a bottle.

I think for purposes of birth control, exclusively breastfeeding means nursing on demand, and not using a pacifier . . . but since your baby is so young, and you're breastfeeding and pumping, I think it would be very unlikely if you got pregnant.

Are you nursing or pumping during the night? That's a big piece of the LAM (Lactational Amenorrhea Method of birth control). Breastfeeding is 98% effective as birth control if your baby is under six months old, you nurse on demand including during the night, you have not had a menstrual period, and your baby does not have any supplemental bottles. I'm not sure that pumping would be as effective. The sucking is what triggers the hormones that make you not ovulate. A pump does not suck as effectively as a baby. You might be fine, but I'm not sure I would take the chance. But I don't take the chance even with exclusive breastfeeding. Even with a less than 2% chance, I personally can't cope with the concept of getting pregnant again when I have a little baby. Many women get a warning period before they ovulate, but some women do ovulate and are able to conceive before their first post-partum period. You just have to decide how important it is to you that you don't get pregnant now.

Exclusively breastfeeding is baby only getting breastmilk, doesn't matter how. BUT it is NOT a good form of birth control! Remember you have to ovulate in order to get a period and most times you don't know when you are going to first ovulate after having a baby.
