We're back from the ultrasound... update
|
|
.... and it looks like we're having a girl! We're very excited - the 3 white lines were very clear and the tech said that while she never says 100%, she had never viewed boy parts that looked like that.
Now for the scary news - they did find a "bright spot" on the heart called an echogenic focus (a calcium deposit.) This can be a soft marker for Down's and I'm a wreck. I'm waiting for the perinatologist's office to call back to schedule an advanced ultrasound. The doctor did say that the baby had no other markers and that my triple screen had come back with a 1 in 6,000 risk for Down's, which is very reassuring. The spot is often found on healthy babies, and I'm praying that this is the case. The rest of the ultrasound looked great, but I'm still worried!
Nicole
UPDATE: The Perinatologist's office called this morning and scheduled a Level II ultrasound for next Thursday the 12th. I'm relieved that I only have to wait a week, and yet a week seems so far away! Please keep our family in your prayers...

Congratulations on your baby girl!!! I know it's hard not to worry when you're given bad news. I am a member of the WTE boards and have seen so many posts about bright spots on the heart that have turned out to be nothing. Try to stay positive!!

Nicole, With my first DS I had a lot of problems with my pregnancy and so I was having ultrasounds all the time well they kept finding things that they were concern about....finally my dr was like stop because apparently a lot of time they see things that wouldn't normally be seen. SO I know how hard it can be but with your good numbers I think I would try to wait before totally freaking out..I know easier said than done. Susan

I so know how you feel. After finding out i was having my longed for son, I was then told the next day that he had a soft marker for an awful life threatening trisomy (he had a Fluid filled cyst in the brain called a chorois plexus cyst...I will never forget that word, it is etched on my memory). It really took away alot of the thrill and i worried myself sick about my lovely baby. I decided against amnio as the risk of miscarrying a perfectly healthy baby as a result of the amnio was higher than the risk of him actually having something wrong with him. One soft marker truly really honestly is usually NOTHING to worry about. many perfectly healthy babies have them. its only when other markers start to turn up that further investigations are warranted. Your triple screen is a much better indicator than a single soft marker that your baby is fine. Please try to enjoy the news that your lovely girl is on her way. HUGS! Oh by the way, i am so glad they are doing an advanced ultrasound, it will put your mind at rest i am sure...mine showed that my son looked so well and normal that they could almost ve certain he was fine. i still worried til i got to hold him and see he was just perfect, but much less so.

Thank you ALL for your kind, reassuring words and stories. Motherhood is scary sometimes, isn't it?? I've been on the computer all afternoon reading, reading, reading, and everything I've read so far sounds reassuring. A single marker in conjunction with a normal triple scan makes an EIL much less worrisome. Still, we'll take all the prayers we can get!

Sorry about the scare, although I'm sure everything is fine. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts.

"If left alone in labor, the body of a woman produces most easily the baby that is not interfered with...If left alone, just courage and patience are required" -Grantly Dick-Read, MD "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs" -Thomas Jefferson
