How to explain my IVF to local RE?

I am a Canadian cycling in the States, so my monitoring is done in Canada. An obligatory part of my local monitoring package is meeting with a local RE - even though I do not cycle here and only do testing, they still want me to see her.

So what do I tell her why I am doing IVF? I cannot tell her it is for GS - it is illegal in Canada and they might refuse to treat me. She can probably tell from my tests that I have given birth (she did my SHG, but was only in the room for 5 minutes and did not ask questions). What do I tell her about how I conceived my son - naturally or via IVF? Plus, she will likely also see from my tests that I have no obvious infertility issues, so do I just keep insisting that I cannot conceive naturally and this is the reason I am doing IVF?

Also, is there a good story explaining why I want to undergo IFV treatment in the States instead of doing it where I live?

Or maybe it is not a big deal at all and GS is done more often here that I think, but I am a terrible liar and want to be prepared anyway.

Just tell them you are dealing with secondary infertility and that you have been seen by a doc in the US but can't afford to stay there the whole time so you are doing monitoring there.  Secondary infertility is very common and can also be used with unexplained infertility.  Both can be used as an excuse as to why you are doing IVF.  It doesn't necessarily have to be an obvious reason as to why you are doing IVF and it keeps you from having to go into details because you don't know them anyway.  LOL!

This is one of my concerns as we are considering the high tech route....except since there is no RE even close, I will be trying to keep it a secret from my MD and if I can get a referall to an OB as we live in a northern community.

As for your story, unexplained secondary IF is a good one...do you think that more Canadians proceed with GS than we know?? I do wonder this myself!!

I'm Canadian too, and have been thinking about this as well... :) I'd say stick as close to the truth as possible - I wouldn't say you had IVF before. You can say that it took a long time to conceive your first and it's been over a year of trying for a second, thus the IVF. As for why it took so long to conceive if all your tests are coming back normal? Ask them to tell you - they are the experts, lol! As for going to the US, maybe you have a friend or family member that works at that clinic, and feel more comfortable going there, despite the travel. Or friends/family have used that clinic and had a really good experience, so again, worth the travel... I'd say keep it simple and say as little as possible.

I'm Canadian too and had to deal with this a little.

I did more like what RedCanoe is proposing... Our DS is already 4, so I said we'd been trying "for awhile" and needed help.  I said we chose a clinic in the US "because we knew others who had been successful there".  I said I didn't know why we were having trouble conceiving.  That seemed to satisfy everyone who asked.  lol!

Uh-oh, I wanted to go to the appointment with my 9-month-old son because I do not have a babysitter. But then my story about having tried for a while wouldn't fly, would it? Happy LOL I guess I will have to ask my husband to take time off work and babysit and I will tell the RE that my son is a couple years old. Then my secondary infertility will be more believable.

Thanks, ladies! I think I have my story now.
