Tamara:So to clarify: cut calories + increase calorie burn = weight loss (but you might risk lowering your milk supply)
Ahhh this is what I have been waiting to hear. So going back to the original post topic this basically tells me that not everyone can lose weight while breastfeeding. The reason being is you may not have any milk to breastfeed with if you want to run the risk of trying lose weight while breastfeeding! In order to breastfeed some people have to maintain their weight. I still don't 100% agree with the calories in/calories out paradigm but I don't think we will go anywhere with that LOL! Just as long as we can all now see that not everyone can lose weight while breastfeeding if you want to have enough milk to feed them. Some can lose weight but not everyone can which is the point to alot of people's posts and what you ended up pointing out yourself. Right?
March 2009 IVF #1 Chemical Pregnancy 10dp3dt Beta #1 - 10; 12dp3dt Beta #2 - 9 April 2009 FET #1; 8dp6dt Beta #1 = 18; 10dp6dt Beta #2 = 42; 6wk1d Gestational Sac measuring behind; 7wk5d Blighted Ovum; 8wk0d D&C IVF in May/June 2011... SIRM Las Vegas here we come!!

Thank you Michaela! That is EXACTLY what I was getting at! Yes, I can starve myself to lose weight. I get that! But when you are tying to feed a baby and maintain your milk...you have to eat! For some of us, it's just impossible. I will not argue the topic. I worked in weight loss and I have seen it! I helped moms that were nursing all the time and saw it. And we have certified nutritionists working for us. They are trained to help nursing moms and we still would see moms struggling. Me included. Not just spouting off my own thing here. It is a FACT that there are a specific set of women who struggle with losing weight while breastfeeding. Just google it and you will see that. Sure, I can go on a 900 calorie diet tomorrow but most likely I will lose my supply and harm my baby. I have been on 1200 calories before and I was so sick from it. I lost a good portion of my milk. I might be willing to do this now seeing as my baby is 8 months and I can take him off if I want to but I really want to get him to a year if possible. I am glad breastfeeding works for the moms who say it worked for them. That is fantastic! But to assume it will work for everyone is just not accurate IMO.

Ok, you guys are cracking me up.
How does this sound...for women who are healthy with no underlying medical conditions, BFing causes an increased amount of calories to be burned, thus allowing them to lose weight provided that they are not having an equal amount of caloric intake of food. If exercise is added to this equation, in that, I mean that...
for women who are healthy with no underlying medical conditions, BFing causes and increased amount of calories to be burned, and along with excercise, which also can cause an icrease in calories to be burned, they can lose weight provided that they are not having an equal or increased caloric intake of food.
Please tell me how the starving women in Africa still manage to BF their kids if their supply is that bad? Liquids are the most important factor in milk supply, as well as bringing baby to the breast often.
Proteins are good foods to eat to increase weight loss as they provide better long term fullness, and balance you blood sugars betters so that you do not feel like you are "starving", and therefore overeat.
Now, I will go vomit, cuz this whole thread is now making me sick.

This is a much better explaination than the simple math that was given before. You don't have to vomit it was a good discussion that was originally started for other reasons and you know that.

Michaela:Am I going to run in circles with this or am I making any sense at all. If I am going to run in circles I will definitely agree to disagree LOL!
You are making total sense to me. I have had hypothyroidism since ds1 was born and have struggled with my weight. Imagine gaining 40-45 pounds during pregnancy and then getting hypothyroidism right after you deliver It is not impossible to lose weight but it is extremely hard. I have to watch every little thing i eat and i have to work out 7 days a week to lose and it is very slow going for me. The simple math is not simple for me and it is very frustrating and demotivating. I would imagine that you must be frustrated too, watching someone eat a whole cheesecake, not exercise at all and still lose weight. But regardless, I still think breastfeeding is the best thing for your baby. I don't agree with people who stop breastfeeding just because they want to lose weight to get to "the perfect size" . And i do agree that breastfeeding does increase weight loss for lots of woman. Which is just another reason to breastfeed

ITA Eden! Yes it was crazy watching her eat an entire cheesecake but she had no choice. It was almost like she was physically harming herself getting to a weight that low. She physically couldn't eat anymore or she said her stomach would explode! LOL! Eden:But regardless, I still think breastfeeding is the best thing for your baby.

I thought it was a good discussion too but I guess it's rubbing people the wrong way. So I will drop the issue.

I'm going to be a bitch one more time, then I am done with this topic as well.
Exclusive breastfeeding in Africa is not necessarily the norm, unfortunately. It should be, of all places in the world. So I do not know if this particular demographic applies to this scenario...

Kind of going OT, but in my IBCLC class, we talked a lot about the Nestle Controversy... My instructor actually would not purchase any Nestle products because of their business practices with regards to infant formula (I should be better about it as well, as we all should! But damnit if Nestle doesn't own EVERYTHING!!!):
