I lost a lot of weight when breastfeeding - I weighed less than before I got pregnant!  I have never been on a diet or tried to lose weight before, so it was amazing to me to lose so much weight!  But once we started cutting down on nursing, the weight loss slowed down.  I'm having trouble getting used to eating normally. That's actually one reason I was so hesitant to wean him! I loved being able to eat anything and still lose weight!

I agree, there is exceptions, but in general BFing rocks for weight loss. I am 5'6, and weigh 123lbs. I do 5 minutes of abs a day, and this is my story. I am 35 yrs old, and have 3 kids under 5. Kitty is 6 mos old. This is my pre-preg and pre-cycling weight.

I only have ever semi-dieted since Kitty was born. I still ate a Blizzard at least twice a week. I ate 3 meals a day. Once a week, my meal was nachos and cheese.  The semi part was that I tried to reduce snacking. Which did not work. There would be times in the day that I would be feeling like I would fall over, my sugar would dip, and I was ravenous. I eat a high protein breakfast, which helps with sugar highs and lows as well.

I discovered this, after 3 kids... I gain about 30lbs per pregnancy. I do eat normally through my pregs, and walk or swim daily, which I do even when not preg. I do not use pregnancy as an excuse to gain 60lbs, but I eat ice cream daily.

Post partum, after ds1, the weight fell off. I was in my jeans in 2 weeks. Ds2, after 2 months, I had 5 lbs to lose still. I dieted, and the weight fell off. At 4 mos, I was no longer dieting, but the weight kept peeling off, so I went underweight. Now, after #3, I did really not a whole lot. At 2months post partum, I was angry I was still 10lbs up. I tried running, and gave up after 2 wks, but kept walking. At 4 mos, without doing a single solitary thing different, the weight started just coming off. And has now settled, by 6 mos, at my pre-preg weight, or possibly a bit below, as I bought a new scale since cycling. I am below the weight I gained to cycle with on my 2nd cycle.

So, my theory is, that EBF, you can achieve your pre preg size, and the weight for me flies off at the 4mos mark. And still eat cake. But I could just be luckyEmbarrassed

I am not sure why this thread is rubbing me the wrong way, but it is...

Maybe this is why I have issue with this post.

I guess when you start throwing out your "numbers" it almost takes on the tone of a competition.  But again, maybe that's my hang-up.  Probably stems from the fact that I spent a significant portion of my life "weighing in."  I was a ballerina, a gymnast and a cheerleader throughout my life.  Each activity had a "weight limit."  I never struggled with it (genetic luck!), but I know many did.  And I guess that I would never want any breastfeeder to read this thread and feel like they are failing because they don't wear a Size 0.  Or a 2.  Or a 4.  Or whatever!

Breastfeeding worked for me.  I'm a staunch supporter of it, and I wish all women would breastfeed their babies, regardless of their weight loss.  At 10 months pp (and still breastfeeding), I'm back to my pre-preg. weight.  I don't weigh myself but maybe once a month, if that.  I am at a very healthy weight for my height, but I don't want to obsess about what the scale says like I did for years.  I'm over it.

I found this article which may kind of comfort those who are struggling: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/16/health/webmd/main643898.shtml

Are there any more recent studies refuting it?  Would love to see them.

What I was saying is that it will come off, and I swear by 4-6 mos, without any work, it did slowly come off. Do not worry at 2 mos that you are still a bit heavier than you want to be---the weight will start working its way off soon!!

Thank you for this!  You don't know how many women I have come in contact with who also feel like they are going nuts because they are supposed to lose weight while nursing.  It's not an exact science.  It works for some.  Not all.  It's very frustrating to the women who can't lose weight while nursing.  Me being one of them.  With each baby I think "maybe this time will be different" just to get let down (no pun intended...LOL) all over again.  I wish to GOD my body would cooperate with the bfeeding and weight loss thing.  I would probably nurse my babies longer.  Unfortunately I feel get the weight off or go coo coo for cocoa puffs.  I will take ds to a year but no more then that.  He gets cut off so mama can start feeling good about herself again!

I have a hard time losing weight in general.  I have a pretty slow metabolism paired with a big appetite, lol.  Not a good combination.  So I don't lose much weight by breastfeeding alone.  However, I don't gain any either.  The only way I can lose weight is if I feel like I'm starving to death.  Then I lose a pound, lol.

This is true.  This is me too.  I have stayed at the same weight since ds was born and I can eat all day long and not gain (probably)...

im so over it.  i can't even post a single thead without a fight.  im over how ig has become.  everyone takes everything personal. its all about each person and their issues.

breastfeeding is good for your kid.  it helps a lot of people lose weight. if it didnt work for you that doesnt mean it doesnt work for anyone.  i forgot why i hadnt been back to ig much lately.  now i remember.

I didn't say that.  I was just giving my thoughts on the topic.  I have seen it work for people.  My bff loses just fine after having a baby.  I'm jealous!  It just sucks that there is so much literature still out there pumping up the benefits of breastfeeding by promising moms it's gonna make you thinner.  You know women are syked about that!  I know I was.  I figured I would breastfeed my first until he was 12 if it meant I could stay thin...LOL  I have the same issue with the books saying you won't get AF if you EBF too.  That's a crock of S#!T.  2 months is all I got!

bf will make you lose weight and will work for everyone  IF you stop eating to many calories.  Its all about calories in calories out. bf works because you burn calories.  but if you fill your tummy with yummy calories and bf you wont lose weight because you will be eating more than you burn.

what makes people over weight?  calories!

how do you lose weight?  cut calories, increase calorie burn.  Its that simple.  and bf makes it that much easier because it helps you burn calories.
