Night Nurse's day 5 PGD drama #UPDATE#

Hi everyone......well where do i start. Yesterday we traveled for 3 hrs in case we had an embie to transfer. We had 6 in total. First call was that they were only going to biopsy 1......turned out to be a boy. In the afternoon they were able to biopsy 2 more and we were meant to get the results in this morning. I get a call this morning to say that they were able to biopsy another 2 this morning (so 5 biopsies in total) but there was a problem with the process (hybridizing) so they were unable to read the results of the biopsy for the 2 from the previous afternoon. The PGD scientist said that he would re-wash the cells and retest them so we should have gotten the results from all 4 of the remaining embies by about 1230hrs. I was told that they would call straight away with any results. In the meantime my husband and I are wandering round a strange city without our 2 boys (who i was missing terribly). Our ET appointment was booked for 1300hrs so we started to make our way to the clinic eventho we had not heard from the scientist. We get to the clinic and they start prepping me for the procedure. I then tell them that we have not heard about our embies yet. The PGD scientist and the Dr then come down to see us and basically say that the process for the 5 point scan has failed again for the 2 embies biopsied in the afternoon and one of the ones biopsied this morning. The only one that worked today was another boy. We were left standing there feeling absolutely shattered.......not having any idea what is going on and where we stand. They have re-biopsied the 2 from yesterday arvo and are going to do full genetic scan incase it is the machines that are the problem (this will take 3 weeks to get the results). They other embie was not good enough to rebiopsy. They have rewashed the cells from all 3 biopsies and are testing them AGAIN overnight so we should get results in the morning if it works. They have frozen what they can so there is a chance of a FET next month..........for some reason, i feel gutted......this is something that we did not foresee. They ensured us that it was not our embies that were the problem. Has anyone had problems with the science of PGD before? I just don't know what to do from here :( SORRY GUYS, FOR SOME REASON THE SPACING DOESN'T WORK WHEN I POST SO I HAVE WRITTEN THE UPDATE LIKE THIS. WELL, THE TEST WORKED OVERNIGHT FOR 2 OF THE REMAINING 3 EMBIES.........BOTH ARE BOYS......THAT IS 4 BOYS OUT OF 5 EMBIES!!!!!!!!!!!!! CERTAINLY NOT 50% CHANCE OF A GIRL. THE REMAINING EMBIE IS GOING THRU A DIFFERENT TEST SO SHOULD HAVE THE RESULTS THIS AFTERNOON BUT I AM CONVINCED IT WILL BE A BOY ALSO. I FEEL LIKE ABSOLUTE RUBBISH! WE ARE IN AUSTRALIA AND THERE ARE VERY FEW LOCATIONS THAT DO PGD AND ONLY ONE THAT WILL LET YOU CHOICE FOR GENDER. THIS ALSO HAS TO BE APPROVED BY A GENETISIST. IN OUR CASE IT IS BECAUSE OF OUR BOYS BEING ON THE AUTISTIC SPECTRUM SO WE REALLY HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO GO OTHER THAN OVERSEAS AND THAT IS NOT AN OPTION WITH OUR CHILDREN. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT TO DO FROM HERE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED :(

Oh hun, what a long and emotionally exhuasting day for you both. This would have to be one of the hardest things we will ever have to go through. Wanting something so badly and have it taken away or put 'on hold'. It plays with our emotions so much. I wish you and your husband all the best with the results tommorrow. I hope you get your dream girl.

Thanks WMP. We had to come home today regardless of what they found on the new biopsy (if it works). We were in sydney all weekend. Not quite like being in thailand i know but still without our boys. Surely out of 5 embies there has to be one girl right?!

Oh Night Nurse - my heart is broken for you.  Yes, your odds if you have 5 should really be 50/50, so you should technically have one or two girls in there.  What an exhausting process it is. 

If I were you, with everything you have been through, I would talk to the RE about another cycle free of charge with the exception of meds.  I know they are human beings and make mistakes, but a machine making a mistake in a process like this?  They are dealing with people's lives and emotions here.  I would think that knowing what you have been/are going through, your RE would comply.

That's terrible the run-around you went through.  What clinic/RE are you using?

I agree with a PP...you should get a refund/discount of some sort because they basically RUINED your cycle because of their own lab errors.  If they don't do this, I would get another RE asap.

I agree with MDB. I am so so sorry that this happened. As if this isn't emotionally draining enough.

I would ask for some type of financial retribution.

 I agree with the PP you should demand some sort of refund. I am sorry this happened to you.

I don't know what that means in regards to culturing embryos but I hope they take care of you if you decide to cycle again.  I am sorry you are going through this.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. Its not fair to make it to this point and then get this kind of news. Try and hold your head up and think positive, there is a 50% chance that 2 girls are there. Good luck to you and your family. I will keep you in my prayers.

How incredibly frustrating and disappointing for you.  I am so upset that happend to you and you must be just stunned.   What clinic is this if you do not mind telling.  I would definitely push for a PGD refund or more.  Is the pgd lab onsite at the clinic you went to or were they shipping it out for pgd?  I would even consider talking to the clinic manager as well as the business manager to discuss your concerns.  I would pursue it immediately even though I know you must be upset and may not feel like dealing with them.   Please keep us posted and I am just so sad that things went like that-- what an awful experience. TJ

Hi minime, it would seem that it is all academic anyway......all boys so far (4 out of 5 embies with the 5th still pending). the labs are all onsight so there is the most minimal interuptions to the eggs/embies. I just feel like i should have had this information 2 days ago rather than the inconvienience and extra cost of being away from our children for a prolonged period of time and coming home empty handed. I don't think that there is much i can do about it tho.

Wow, what a friggin mess!  I'm so, so sorry!  You must be feeling devastated right now...I wish that there was something that I could say, but I think that clinic does not sound very professional at all...especially since they don't even seem to communicate with you very well.  And for all the equipment to break at once with your embies is a nightmare.  I would not only consider switching to a completely different dr., but I would also expect some refund compensation for the equipment hurt your embies...wow.  I hope that you are able to come over to the US and find a clinic that will be much  more professional.  i'm so very sorry.  Maybe you'll get good news before you even read this that your last little embie was a girl???
