From what I understand.... the thermisol is used as a preservative in multi-dose vaccines to extend the shelf life.  So I think that the single dose vaccines don't last as long.

Just came across some helpful tips to help lessen chance of getting it, so I thought I would share.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

 1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

 2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

 3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4... Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Tryin4Pink:

A pregnant woman in our city just died after giving birth while having H1N1.  The baby is fine.  An 8 year old boy also just died last week from it.

I just found out that a good friend of mine (DH's cousin's wife) and her 3 1/2 year old son have H1N1.  They went to Disney last week, and must have picked it up there.  They brought it home (on a plane) and gave it to her sister, and her 2 kids, and gave it to a friend visiting from VA, and his 2 kids.  They may have given it to her sister-in-law and her son, too.  Her statement is, "These kinds of things just spread fast".

We were supposed to go out to a piano bar for a friend's birthday this weekend, and she IS going.  Another friend and I told her we would not be going, and she asked me if it was because of her, or if I was just afraid of picking it up in general.  Obviously, it is because of her that I will not be going.  She said it's not that big of a deal and you are only sick for a couple days.  She also seems to think that since she did not have a fever then she was not contagious.  So, it's people like this that have no concern for others' well being, and will not stay home, that I will be getting the vaccine.

I think she's right, it does spread fast especially since you can spread it before you really know you have symptoms. However, if she's no longer sick and going out this weekend, what's the big deal? If it's over, it's over. You can't catch it once she's done being sick. Confused

I have read that you can be contagious for 7 days or more after the onset of symptoms and even longer in children.  My son was invited over a friends house tonight and his brother has had it since sunday.  He doesn't have a fever anymore, but I'm still not comfortable with him going over there.

Since you're preggy I probably wouldn't risk it.  Usually they say that after they don't have fever for 24 hours it's safe, but I did read somewhere that kids can be contagious longer.

Exactly.  I was honest with my friend and she understood.

Hey, just saw this post.  The latest statistic I read is pretty scary, so even if you're pregnant you may want to consider the vaccine.  Of the 700 women pregnant that got H1N1, 100 ended up in the ICU (very sick) and 28 died.  Just felt it was important to pass this information on.

That's the thing, she was just diagnosed with it that day.  She IS sick, her son IS sick, etc.  She has now spread it to my 2 year old nephew, who fell down onto the floor having seizures and was taken to the hospital by ambulance on Wednesday night.  They KNEW they had it, and still were around all of these people.  Now, she knows she has it, and feels terrible, but doesn't have a fever, and is going to a very crowded bar where she will most likely spread it to at least a handful of people if not hundreds.

So, that is the big deal.  It's not over.  I realize that if someone is not sick, then they can't spread it.

I am getting it. I am not one to evr get a vaccine, Im not big on them! But my OB said I really need to have it. More pregnant women are dying from it than anyone else, and it will also protect our babies! So, Im getting it for my litle baby, and really no other reason but to protect her! I can get it here on the 24th, so I hope I dont go into labor first! I hope that helped some of you make a decision!
