Rotavirus Vaccine?
|
|
Who here got the Rotavirus Vaccine for their baby? It didn't exist when my twins were born, but my doctor told me about it at our 2 month appointment, and I've been trying to decide ever since. My boys have had the virus before and it was MISERABLE - nearly 2 weeks of constant vomiting and diarrhea and no sleep for anyone. It's appealing to me to avoid that experience with my new little guy...but then I keep reading that the vaccine is a live vaccine and so can cause many of the symptoms of the virus itself. Did this happen for any of you? Help me decide - my time is running out! (this is the last week when I can give the vaccine before he's too old for it).

It is an oral vaccine that they put in the baby's mouth - quick and easy. Both my little ones have had it with no problems. No rotovirus either.

I have delayed most of my kids vaccines so I doubt my kids got that at 2 months. I just this past month got my soon to be 6 year old all caught up with his vaccines. I still have to get my 4 year old several vaccines and my soon to be two year old twins still do not have most of the vaccines either. I just stagger them out and wait longer and I do one at a time. I think I did rotovirus at 12 months if my memory serves me on the twins. TJ

nope for all 3 kids. If you bf, you will give some protection.
Another reason was I read an article that was saying that Rotavirus mutates so much that the vaccine is not effective.

My boys are in preschool now, and I'm sure they'll be bringing home every virus under the sun. It's not covered by healthcare here in Canada, and will cost nearly $300 (though dh's work drug plan may cover part of that).

Hospital stays for rotovirus have decreased 84% since the vaccine was introduced. My last two have had the drops. Talk to your dr about the pros and cons.

DD is the only one of my kids who got it. I think my other kids, they didn't have it, and when I had DS3 they were re-doing it. DD had no reactions to it (except that she just hated it being put in her mouth). I would get it, thetre's not much worse than when your baby is vomitting and has diarrehea non stop!
eta: I had to ask for it, they didn't ask me.

My doctors office doesn't offer this! I can't remember why, but none of my kids got it even though I would probably get it for them...ugh!

DS2 got the vaccine, it was great, it was a drink he had to take at 2, 4 and 6 month appointments, and no side effects. Go for it, there was no down side for us.

The vaccine wasn't available when my oldest was little. He caught the HORRIBLE virus from his bigger cousin and was hospitalized for 2 weeks. He caught it SOOO bad. When they released him from the hospital after 2 weeks on IV fluids and medicines he as still not well for another week or so. It was awful!! So when the doctor asked me if I wanted it when my younger son was little I jumped right on board. He had no problems, didn't even mind having the stuff in his mouth and has NEVER gotten the virus... knock on wood:) I am not an advicate for ALL vaccines but I will definitly choose this one again when our 3 rd child is old enough!

Thanks for the advice, everyone. In the end I decided to get it. Hearing your stories reminded me of how HORRIBLE it was when my twins had it - and for them it lasted 2 weeks! I picked it up this morning and found out that dh's drug plan covers almost all of it. DS took his dose happily and so far shows no ill effects.

DS2 just got his, and no symptoms.
His pedi. told us it's a live virus, but not full strength .. it's lab grown so they can modify how potent it is, ans they just make it strong enough for the body to get immunity (meaning it actually attacks your baby's immune system, enough for them to get a fever to get the immunity) .. I would never NOT get vaccinations for my kids .. honestly, the way schools are now a days I'dd be afraid not to, but I can see where some parents are concerned. Just adding my 2 cents
