Hoarders?

Anybody watch Hoarders on A&E?
I do not know why, but I love this show.
I feel so sad for these people, but OMG, how do these folks live like this??
The episode now is a lady who hoards cats, as well as junk. They took out someting like 75 cats, and 35 were dead. In this tiny house. I am admittedly a crazy cat lady, but seriously could not even imagine.

I saw one where the woman hoarded but also couldn't throw away food. She had rotten pumpkins around her house from Halloween and rotten food from years before in the kitchen. They had to use masks and protective gear to remove the grossness. But she was not in the right mind to get help for the problem and they didn't get very far.
It's very interesting but so sad for those living in the conditions. Totally an illness that needs professional help to recover from.

I've never seen the show but it sounds really gross. I don't think i could stomach it and thank goodness no one has invented smell-o-vision

My DH and I watched it last weekend. I guess it was a marathon because we saw the one where the lady had the rotten pumpkins and the other family were getting threatened with losing their kids. And we watched another one where a lady kept everything and this guy was going to be evicted from his apartment because it was so bad. I agree ... it's so hard for me to understand ... but my DH kept saying that it's just like any other addiction. It's still hard to understand!
Expecting Feb 1, 2009!!!

That show fascinates me.. I can't turn it off, even though I find some of the things so revolting!
I truly feel sorry for those people though :( I hope they receive psychological help.. it seems like the people just swoop in to help them clean up without addressing the true psychological issues.

Yeah, I agree ... I think that they don't really focus a lot on psychological isues and just try to clean up ... that's not going to help! So, hopefully some get the hep that they really need. They should have counseling that is followed even after they clean. Or, they should do a recap that shows if they have been able to keep their houses cleaned after the cameras leave.

OH...MY...GAWD!! I read this thread and thought it might be an interesting show so I DVR'ed it. I was eating when it first came on, but not for long...totally lost my appetite! That was disgusting! I can understand poeple living like that if it's just themselves, but with animals and kids That makes me mad! I feel bad for them, it's not their faults and they have to live like that.

I've seen it. I grew up around hoarders, and it is not pretty. My mom and grandma both were/are. Not to the disgusting degree of the people on that show, although my mom's kitchen could get kind of gross if she let it. She would sometimes forget about food and it would spoil and there were flies, but she didn't have an attachment to it. But her entire house is overflowing with boxes and junk. It is EVERYWHERE. You can hardly walk through it. She also has her garage and two storage units filled. She has been saying for years that she is going to clean it out, but it never happens. My grandma is a shopper and likes to buy lots of things. Her house is packed with stuff. When I went to visit 7 years ago, there was stuff on a counter in her laundry room that had been there since I was in high school. She grew up with an abusive, alcoholic mother and never had anything of her own, so I can kind of understand it. I think that is why I am such a neat freak and cannot stand mess and clutter.

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs" -Thomas Jefferson

I felt dirty after watching this show...like I needed a shower. Thinking about it now is bothering me...I think it was all of the rotting things. If something isn't functional or overwhelmingly sentimental, I throw it out or give it away. I felt really bad for those people but also very frustrated.
